You need to be more specific.  Are you planning on building a machine
from scratch?  Do you already have a case (or any other hardware) you
intend to use?  Give us some more details and most everyone here will be
happy to point you in the right direction.

I know we've discussed this before, but I can't keep up with new hardware.
A couple of months ago, lots of us were buying Celeron 300As.  Now that
those are gone, Voodoo III and Pentium IIIs have arrived, and
God-knows-what-else has changed on the hardware scene, what is the best and

Thanks, Bill.  I'm talking about a scratch-built machine.  The only
component I have on hand that's a candidate for being incorporated is an
8-meg Voodoo II, which I would ditch if there is a better alternative.

You can try these sites.  They have lots of info on Overclocking and all
that jaz.

Thanks, Robert.  But I guess I haven't made it clear what an idiot I am when
it comes to this stuff.  I'd like to get on the web or walk into a local
store with a list of components that will max out GPL.  My part in this will
be only to say, "You build.  Me buy."  :-)

Regards

Hmmm, You need to decide what your priorities are first.
Video card-  your present card will do fine, otherwise wait until that card
won't run the app you run.
since my priority is GPL my thriller 8 meg works perfect, runs Mechwarrior 3
fine too.
CPU - 300a slot 1 celerons are still available. as low as $70! However they
probably are not as      overclock friendly as earlier versions, I won't get
into that to deep here. Bang for buck is probably some newer celeron. Not
slamming amd but think twice before you get anything but intel.
Keep in mind that there are slot 1 cpu's and socket 370 cpu's - needs to work
with the mobo!
Mobo - Well I highly recommend Abit because of the softmenu, very user friendly
great boards.
Case - get one with plenty of cooling and easy to service.
Ram - obviously 128 megs of pc 100 is the required start. One single chip is
good.
Check these sites
http://www.triptonics.com/   As you can see they offer gaurenteed celeron333's
running at 500!
http://www.pricewatch.com/     The first place to check availablity of products
and prices!
I built a celeron 300a last year and it has been running 24/7 since. I use a
Hercules thriller 8 meg video card (best for Papy sims-not 3dfx). With all
graphics on full field it gets 27-28fps on the grid and 36 by the time I shift
to 2nd. I will upgrade when I have an app (N3) that requires more horsepower.
Until then I am perfectly happy with a system you could build for $400
(case, mobo, cpu, ram) and use your present video, hd,cd,monitor etc. e:mail me if
you want.

Well, your primary concern then is $$$'s.  You can certainly get more bang
for the buck if your build the system from individual parts you assemble
yourself.  I'd honestly look into any of the "name brand" direct resellers
(Dell, Gateway, etc...) if you're intent on purchasing a turn-key system.
Sure you can pay less for equivelent performance in an overclocked system.
However, there are very few (if not zero) vendors who will give you the
kind or warranty and tech support on an overclocked system as you will get
from one of the major direct resellers.
Now, if you could care less about a warranty and $'s are your primary
concern, then I would reccomend you look for someone that can build you
something close to the following...

Motherboard - Asus P2B or Abit BX6 rev 2
Processor - Celeron 433 PPGA with slocket adapter *
Video Card - Whatever you want, Keep your existing V2 for now **
RAM - 128MB of PC100 spec.
Hard Drive - IBM Desktar GX series ***
Sound - SB Live! Value or Diamond MX300: read up and pick one

* AMD processors are by no means junk.  It's just that Intel has slashed
the prices on the Celerons to such a degree that they are presently the
best value.

** The Hercules Thriller mentioned elsewhere in this thread is a wonderful
card for only for Papyrus sims.  A fair amount of people (myslef included)
feel that the Thriller is pretty lousy for anything else.

*** There are other good drives.  These just happen to be known as good
drives for overclocked systems.

Bill!  Thank you very much!

Your recommendation was thorough and EXACTLY what I was hoping for!

My PII233 was okay for training, but really stunk with a full grid.  This
has me pointed in the right direction.

Thanks again

You may want to consider the P3 450 processor. You can get it now for
$260-$300. Check www.sharkyextreme.com for the latest prices.

I belive he said he's buying a computer with GPL in mind. PIII isn't any
better than PII or Celeron in GPL. If you ask me I would buy Epox dual board
( the one without SCSI ) with 2 Celeron 300As overclocked to at least 450
for that money. GPL 1.1 will support 2 processors ( Win2000, maybe even
WinNT 4.0 ).
