Ok, so I got the demo.  Hadn't read anything about system requirements
until (of course) I d/led it hour later.  I read P166 min.  Well guess what
I got a P133.  So I feel adventurous and try it anyway.  Menus look great
and all interface is pretty slick, but just don't have the muscle to run
it.

So I ask all of you hardware guys out there, where do I look to see what I
can upgrade to on my motherboard.  I have a Compaq  Presario tower.  I am
computer literate and have looked but haven't seen it on or near the chip
so maybe I'm missing it, help me out?

Check your manual to see what your jumpers can be set to.  If they cant be
set any higher, an overdrive processor might do you.  ;)

Hi Steve and Carol!

You should have a manaul of the motherboard somewhere...
In the Manaul tyou should be able to reed what kind of processors it can
handle.
It's as simple as that :-)

But try to get a Intel prossesor, because Cyrix gives the most troubles.
Certainly GPL isn't OK for the cyrix 6x86 chip.....
AMD makes fast ones as well, but I don't have had one of these, so I
don't know.

If you have other problems, let me know...

I would find out the type and model of your motherboard. Depending on what the
top-end systems were when the motherboard was made, it will go up most likely
to a 166 or 200.  The brand should be stamped on it, maybe its on the bottom
side, or you might have to remove some cards to see it- and then get on the
manufacturer's website to find the upgrade specs. That or call Compaq and wait
on hold and cross your fingers you get a tech rep who knows how to look it up.

says...

If you want a computer which is easy to upgrade - STAY AWAY FROM COMPAQ
computers. Compaq's policy: If you want to upgrade your Compaq - buy a
new Compaq! It *is* possible to upgrade, but not when you look at the
price tag...

The motherboards don't follow either AT or ATX form factors, so you'll
have to buy a new case. The Compaq PSU will not fit in the new case, so
you might just as well buy a new computer...

I *guess* it's even impossible to change the multiplier or voltage
settings, which makes purchasing a new CPU difficult.
