MP problem(s) and Q's with N2K3

Okay. I have started to give some games the MP tries. Got a better system
for my GF and we're trying some games through a Lan TCP/IP connection. I ran
into trouble with N2K3 tonight. It finds the IP addresses fine and
everything seems to be in order, BUT we can never connect to each other
whether it be host OR join. The connection just keeps saying timed out. I
can't find anywhere in the game to address timing out. It finds the LAN game
and lists it, what am I not doing right to have this happen?? I can MP other
games over the same LAN network. Also, how can we setup a game where it is
only her and I and set number of AI drivers?? Neither of us are anywhere
NEAR ready for other "real" drivers. Both games are up to date with patches
and all. Mods and game run fine outside of MP..........looking forward to
racing her and a field of AI real soon.           Thanks for any help.

Okay...........this seems to only happen with Zonealarm on. I checked the
approriate areas to tell it to allow the useage. Any ideas on why it would
not allow me?? Zonealarm is still rather new to me. I tried a connection w/o
Zonealarm on and it worked fine.  Thanks

V,
In the readme.txt file in the N2003 folder, they will list a range of ports
that need to be forwarded to allow connections thru your firewall, write
down the range of ports and then open Zonealarm and set them up, sorry, not
sure how, I have a router that I do this with, should be similar.

The WHY is easy.  ZoneAlarm does not know you are playing a game.  ZA
only knows that some unauthorized program is trying to use various ports
that it has been told to watch over.  So ZA is doing it's job.  You have
check the Nr2k3 readme for the ports to be forwarded or opened, so ZA will
allow Nr2k3 to use your system properly.

Did you go into ZA's Program Control and change all selections for the
nascar EXE to "Allow"?

I also have a router. I use a D-link router. I have all my settings to allow
in ZA...so sounds like a router issue then. Been working on it but no
success as yet. Not entorely sure what to set and change in the router
settings.

MP problem(s) and Q's with N2K3

Your trying to HOST on a machine that has ZA??  (even better your not trying
to host out the the real world)?  I never ever got this to work, tried for
months to do so, back when ZA was fairly new, up to even version what,,, 3?

If you have a firewall/router, then technically all zone alarm is doing is,
protecting your machine from any other on the LAN.  Oh wait, but you have
that server in the DMZ? Not a Good idea in my humble opinion.

Still if Im hosting to a local machine, the ip isnt one that can be seen on
the "net" and you should take the host OUT of the DMZ of the router, then
disable ZA (which is refusing any unsolicted connections from any computer).
This way you can race each other easy enough.

Now if your gonna do both, (host to that machine on the LOCAL net, & host
via Papy (allowing far off buddies to join you or not as you could just do
IP races) you should forward just the specifed ports from the router to the
NR hosting machine.  This would be much better, instead of having that
hosting machine being in the DMZ.  ZA in the PC setting in the DMZ, isn't
safe IMHO.

Last, to join a race in sierra or in ip (via internet) you dont have to
forward anything, or disable anything on the ZA (and 4 brands of
firewal/routers I have tried) because software on your computer "Requests"
the connection to be made, and us usually allowed (unless you set the
router/firwall not to allow anything).  BTW this is why Spyware is a problem
because it can get on there, and then automatically start asking more "of
its kin" to move in.  So that is why you forward (sometimes stated as
"allow" the ports from (incoming traffic) to the host machine, when you
host...   machines that you "Dont Know" are asking for a port, and by
default Firewalls are set to no allow.
