I was going to try another MP race this morning(tuesday) at about 6.  However,
when I logged on, there was only one other person online.  His handle was
'Wrongway'.  Well, that didn't exactly INSPIRE confidence in his abilities, so
I just logged off.  My question is, would any of you have done the same thing?

I am NOT paranoid.  And why are you always watching me?!?

heh... At LEAST he's honest, half the drivers on there should be named
"Crash" or "Wrongway".

I don't dig this handle business at all.  I thought it was stupid back in
the BBS heyday and I think it's stupid on the server. It's another thing
to hide behind.  On sunday, it ain't Squeege and Monsterkiller in the
lead draft, it's real guys with real names unlike WWF wrestling.  If I
had it to do over, I'd have my whole name as a username instead of just
markmc, but I'm not going to give up my skill level now.  I want to race
against real people who I can call by a real name.  handles lost their
lustre with me after CB radio died.

I was there as well. Must of gotten there right after you left.
Maybe I was lucky there were only myself and "Wronyway" there!
Needed 5 to start a race.

I think I can speak for almost ALL the beta-testers, and certainly most of the
experienced drivers on Hawaii that handles are not respected or encouraged.

Basically, ProHCS will probably require a non-handle name to enter.  As Mark
said, we take this racing serious.. and want to race names, not handles.

So, if you want to ultimatly get involved in the high-skill level races and
series, I would suggest you not use handles -- it will get you trust and
respect much faster.  But clearly, everyone should make their own choice.

Well, I don't think anyone is going to pelt you with rocks for doing
that.  I just wanted to get my opinion across on the deal.  As was said
earlier on, a handle that lends itself to a practice that would be
considered non-prudent such as "Crasher", makes me think this person
wants nothing more than to crash somebody.  See a number of userids of
this ilk makes me want no part of the whole enchilada, plus, the personal
feel is diminished, just like I feel odd calling you Prorat, y'know.

I tried to use my real name, Mike, but of course, it was taken. I then
tried every itteration of my first, middle and last names in different
ways to try to use them. Again, could not. So, I settled for Parnelli.
So, I guess my point is, some of us have no choice.

Mark,

Here's my take on the whole "handles" bit and why I chose one instead
of some form of my name:

a) It had absolutely nothing to do with anonymity.
b) Looking at the race logs from April, there are 10 people with "Jim"

in their ID. I'd rather not be confused with them and I'm sure
they wouldn't want to be confused with me should I be a
"crasher". We're already reading here a confusion between two
     racers named "Bill".
c)  If "we" raced together enough to the point at which we respected

each other, you'd know me as Jim, not JimMc, JimMcG, or some
other form of my name. Hardly, worth parting with the "whole
     enchilada", I think.
d) Once the service is out of beta, maybe I will change to a form of

my name, although I wouldn't like it. Even though I'm only up to a

"2", it would cost a good bit in LD charges to drop to 0 with a
new ID and work my way back up. Doesn't ensure "domestic
tranquility" if you know what I mean.

So that's my pair O' Lincolns....

Sorry, Jim but I'm guessing we're all going back (O.K. or staying as <G>)
zeros when the move from Open-Beta to the Paying service comes.  I could
be wrong but I lean towards expecting the worst (and then usually being
happily surprised <g>).....

BTW I also wanna say that I agree totally with the idea that MP Handles
aren't condusive to forming racing trust online (at least for me).  That's
not to say that the non-handles are any better, just that at first glance
I trust them a little bit more...

I'll stick my neck out a bit and say that I'll make it a priority to keep
ratings if/when we transition from the prototype phase.   Ratings systems
work better when you've got more accurate input information, so keeping the
information in any transition would be a net positive.   Having a good
baseline makes it easier to figure out where newcomers fit in, not to
mention the goodwill gesture towards those who've worked their way up in
the ratings.
