Misc. thoughts on video cards, ICR2, GP2, homemade wheels and pedals...

Don't know about the rest of you guys, but the latest drop in the
price of RAM ($100 for 16Meg chip!) is staggering, and probably the
single best thing that's happened in computers (overall) in the last
year! I went out yesterday and bought 32 Megs of RAM, in two 16 Meg
chips, for a total of 48 Meg in my computer. My system is a P90 with a
Diamond Stealth 64 4 meg VRAM card, 2.8 gig HD, 8X CD, etc... that I
was pretty happy with, considering that I bought it as a top of the
line machine less than a year and a half ago and now could get a P166
for less than half of what I paid for this, but I digress... Anyway,
after adding the RAM, I ran ICR2-and it blew me away! I now get ALL
detail at a better frame rate than I used to get after dropping
grass, track, crowd, and smoke! A really amazing difference! I know that
the Diamond Stealth 64 is one of the best cards for DOS games-that's
why I bought it-but I had NO IDEA that system RAM was so important for
graphics performance! Another obvious benefit of this purchase is the
ability to open just about every program I own in Windows and not
worrying about crashing the system... So, for those that are drooling
over a new machine, but don't have the dough to make it happen,
consider what a massive RAM infusion will do for your existing
system-and now it truly is a bigger bang for your buck than almost
anything else you can do-you won't regret it!

The GP2 situation here in the States is a little sad-MP says worldwide
release on July 23rd (a Tuesday, for God's sake) yet I see almost
every other corner of the globe has it before we do! What's up with
that? Is SH/MP so stupid as to not realize they lost TONS of sales
JUST by not releasing it on a weekend? If the game is done, what
advantage is there to not releasing it in the US when the other
countries got it? As far as playability goes, from what I've read in
this group, the sim is killer-NOT arcadish like World Circuit-so will
keep us all probably busier than we want to be to get a competitive
setup-it sounds as though Papyrus may have a little ways to go to get
to the top of the heap again-I for one hope that competition breeds a
better animal and that the next round of sims we get include all that
they learn from GP2 as well as the natural evolution of
ICR,NASCAR,ICR2...

The homebuilt home page has added quite a few new plans and photos of
other wheel and pedals setups at:

A walkthrough for adding wheel mounted shifter buttons on your T2 has
been added on the main wheel page at:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/~wottenad/wheel.htm
If there is anyone out there that has built their own driving
controls, please check out the site and consider mailing (snail or
e-mail) me some photos of your setup for inclusion in the
photogallery. I now own a scanner and will gladly scan your photos or
any other materials if it will help present your plans. I am planning
a new, updated version of my own controls, and am expecting quite a
few new plans from several different people very soon, so there will
be updates constantly-check back often!
