Help With SBLive Wanted

by Peter Hoope » Wed, 20 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Can anyone offer me any advice regarding some problems I am having with my
new SBLive card.

Firstly, I run the DOS version of ICR2 \ CART but for some reason it doesn't
seem to recognise that I have a card at all. It uses the PC speaker for
sounds and when I try to calibrate my Thrustmaster Formula 1 wheel and
pedals the arrows don't budge at all. It simply doesn't appear to be
recognising that a card is installed.

Now, correct me if I am wrong but I was under the impression that the SBLive
used SB16 emulation mode when in DOS. I have checked the devices and SB16
does appear there and I have matched the IRQ, DMA, etc settings with those
in the ICR2 \ CART setup but still no joy.

Anybody else experienced anything similar?. Does this card not operate under
DOS? I am desperate for help here as I still enjoy some time in this sim but
no sound and no wheel & pedals mean no go....

It ran fine using my bog standard on board game port and previous sound
card.

Secondly, I am finding that the card intermittently mutes itself for no
apparent reason. Initially I thought this was just in GP500 and GPL but I
have since noticed it occassionally happening on Windows startup. In the 2
sims mentioned I can be driving around and the sound will suddenly
disappear, after a further half a lap or so it returns and then somtimes
disappears again later. If I exit to Windows whilst the sound is still
missing I find that the volume control applet in the system tray is muted. I
can un-mute it without problem but am struggling to come up with a reason
for why it is happening. Occasionally this muting will also occur at Windows
startup, I have the default Windows sound set for  when Windows open and
this sometimes starts to cut out and that is when the muting happens.

This really is getting frustrating, I never had any of these problems with
my previous card but after reading so many good reports of the SBLive I
opted to change over to that. I'm really not too keen on taking it back as
there is so much that I like about it but obviously these problems are the
deciding factor at the moment. EB have given me and extension on my 10 days
money back guarantee so that I can try to resolve the problem so would
appreciate any help that can be given.

Many Thanks

Are you using the original (1.0) drivers?

LiveWare 2 is on Creative's site and LiveWare 3 should be there within hours
(it's shown as available but the link still goes to LW2 or if I try it
another way I get 3 download sites that don't work).

Worth a try.

FWIW, I've found that some games just can't handle an emulated SB by a PCI
sound card. I haven't tried DOS with my SB yet but I had no end of troubles
with a PCI Crystal chipset.

Dale.

I have the exact same problem, i have yet to find an answer
 i downloaded the win95 upgrade patch for icr2 but that didnt work  for me
either.
I also had the muting problem but after downloading the newest driver and
completely reformating my machine to get a totally clean operating system to
start from ,(dont get me wrong i am not suggesting you reformat, just that i
was completely stuck and had nothing to loose) I reinstalled everything
again all with fresh new drivers i downloaded. everything from my sound
drivers, to directx6.1,  to my Video drivers(why i dont know)it seems to
have calmed down.

You might try uninstalling the card and devices then reinstall the card AND the
sb live software and drivers for the general sound problems, as for the icr2,
it's luck imo

I had some problems too, in N2, problem was that the SB16 emulation was
running on IRQ9, and DOS and IRQ9 doesn't always go well together, but
once I moved the IRQ for the SB16 emulation to IRQ5, I have not had any
problems

>Can anyone offer me any advice regarding some problems I am having with my

You should be able to run the game out of W98 (in a DOS
box). Then W98 will use your card's windows settings in the
game. I have ICR2 setup to run out of Windows. You should find
some DOS compatibility settings in the Device Manager which
the sound settings in the game have to be set to.

If you have to reboot into DOS, the card probably has a device driver
which you have to load to activate the soundcard (especially a PCI
soundcard). My SBPCI64 needs a driver if I reboot into DOS.

I believe this may be what you are looking for when running Sb'live
in Dos? I run a mulit-config so I can either go into windws98 or go
into dos without any 98 in the back ground... It has worked for me
for years..

**SbLive Lines in:
autoexec.bat
SET SOUND=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\sbpci64
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330  T6
SET CTSYN=C:\WIN98
C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\SBLIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM
As you can see I did use my old "sbpci64" directory/folder to "set=
sndscape" I will send you my directory/folder if you want it. If these
lines above do not match your paths & settings just change them so
they will match.. Also you do not need any statements in config.sys.
I have never had any problems. None, Nunca, Nada ;0)
Maybe others have a better way for Windows9x & will post them
too but I like using this so I have nothing from windows running in

Help With SBLive Wanted

Peter,

I get ICR2 Rendition to work with my SBLive by booting to DOS from a
bootdisk. The autoexec.bat file looks like this:

path=a:\;c:\windows;c:\progra~1\creative\sblive\dosdrv\;

rem SB Live stuff

set blaster=a220 i9 d1 h7 p330 t6
SET CTSYN=C:\WINDOWS
C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\SBLIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS

And the config.sys file looks like this:

device=c:\windows\himem.sys /testmem:off
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems
files=60
buffers=20
dos=high,umb
stacks=9,256
lastdrive=z

Lastly let ICR2 setup autoeselect your soundcard. When I do this it picks
the following values:

220, 7, 1

Hope this helps.

Many Thanks for all the replies to my query guys..
I'll give them all a shot and let you know how it goes.
It's great to be able to come on here and get so much input in such a short
space of time...

Thanks again
