SBLive Gameport Problem - Please HELP!!

by Peter Hoope » Sat, 23 Jun 2001 07:58:49

Hi all,
I am desperately hoping someone here can help me with a system problem
I am having. I have just upgraded my PC with an new motherboard
(Apollo KT133 chipset) an AMD Athlon 1200 and an extra 128mb RAM (now
up to 256).

I know I should really have reformatted my HD but I was just hoping to
be able to plug it into the new setup along with my V5 5500, SBLive
and TV card and get up and running again. However, although everything
else is working fine I cannot get the gameport installed properly.
When I booted up all the peripherals were recognised and drivers
installed, including for the SBLive but when it got to the gameport
the system froze when trying to install the drivers. I had to reset
the PC as it killed everything and now the gameport appears in Device
Manager with an exclamation mark against it.

I have tried updating the driver from Device Manager and removing the
gameport from there and letting Win98SE pick it up again on reboot but
both of these methods lead to a complete freeze again.

The motherboard came with onboard audio (including gameport) which I
have disabled in the BIOS although Win98SE still kept trying to
re-install it when I rebooted. I therefore disabled them in Device
Manager as well and this stopped that particular problem.

This is a erally frustrating problem as I am desperate to get back to
GPL \ N4 and Super Karting 1 (for John Bodin's excellent offline
league this Saturday) but can't until this problem is sorted.

Please can anyone offer me any advice on this or am I stuck with a
reformat...

TIA

My motherboard also came with onboard audio which I also disabled using BIOS
but it wouldn't go away. Then Sideshow Bob suggested in this newsgroup that
I disable it using the jumper on the motherboard. This made the sound chip
go away for good and also fixed another couple of minor glitches, including
a scarcity of IRQ's (which may be the problem with your gameport).

If you have the documentation for your motherboard it should have a picture
showing where all the jumpers are. When you find the onboard sound jumper
just take note of where it (so you can set it back if need be) is then flip
it to the other setting. Make sure you ground yourself first so you don't
blow up your new toy ;)

Unfortunately this doesn't appear to be an option for me as there are
no pins on the motherboard to do this.

Yep, I have gone into the BIOS and set the option to disable onboard
audio but once I start Windows (98SE)it still tries to install the
drivers for it. I got around this problem by putting a tick in the
'disable in this profile' option of Device Manager but just wondered
wheterh it might still be causing a conflict as the SBLive gameport
still freezes my PC when Windows tries to install the drivers for it.

Did my tip about checking for VIA updates help?  The SBLive problem
has been around for a while, and I thought there was a patch or a
fix???

Did you try installing the driver in Safe Mode? Sometimes that works.

SBLive Gameport Problem - Please HELP!!

Hi John,
Unfortunately I couldn't find anything about it on the VIA site and
they have not replied to my e-mail about it either. What I did find
was the Via 4in1 updaet but that hasn't solved the problem either.

Cheers

Pete

PS:- Looking unlikely that I will make the 2nd league warm-up race now
:O(

Perhaps deleting it from device manager instead of disabling will help now
that you have disabled the device in the BIOS.

Subject: Re: VIA chipset and SBlive 1024!!!!!
Newsgroups: creative.products.sound_blaster.live
Date: 2001-02-13 00:02:04 PST

The VIA chipset issue has been around for a LONG time.  The problem is
with certain VIA chipsets in how they handle PCI bus latency.  This
problem is not exclusive to SBLive cards either.  Numerous other
pro-audio cards fall victim to the same PCI bus flaw.  Unfortunately,
I have yet to see Creative post a disclaimer stating that VIA chipsets
may cause undesireable results with their Emu10k1 based cards.
Here are your options:

1) Change order of the PCI cards in your system
2) Check your BIOS to see if it has a PCI bus latency setting, set it
to 0 and see if the problem goes away
3) If your BIOS doesn't have a PCI bus latency setting, download
TweakBIOS and set it there
3) Disable UDMA in the BIOS
4) Replace your sound card with one that doesn't crackle and pop with
your VIA chipset m/b
5) Replace your motherboard with an Intel chipset based motherboard,
or AMD chipset for Athlons
