Does anyone have a good recommendation for a single video card for 3dfx
and 2D (ie windows, etc) ???

Since supposedly N2 will be 3dfx soon and N3 is going to be 3dfx
supported also...  I am holding off on buying the Stealth II or any
rendition card until the 3dfx version comes out and I can evaluate it.

I need a good general card to accelerate windows95 as well.  Does anyone
know if there is a good 3dfx card that does both well ???  Are there any
at all that do both like the StealthII ??   I know Canopus packages two
cards together.

Does the Pure3D handle both??

Any help would be appreciated.

The 3Dfx Rush cards are 2D/3D combo cards.  They initially had some
problems with incompatibilities (some games would only run on the Voodoo
Graphics 3D-only boards) but with companies how using the latest Glide
libraries this really isn't a problem.  For the most part they perform
similarly to the Voodoo Graphics cards, but with games like GLQuake
which use Z-buffer and Alpha-blending simultaneously, they are about 15%
slower (this difference is shrinking as the drivers mature).  Their 2D
is pretty good as well.  You're best bet would probably be to get one of
the Riva128 based cards for now.  Their 2D is faster than a Millenium
and their Direct3D is faster then the 3Dfx cards.  The Voodoo2 will be
out early next year, and these two cards would make a perfect match
giving you the best of both worlds.

I've been doing some research for myself, and here's what
I've been able to find out:

The Diamond Viper 330 will do both... it is a RIVA 128 card,
so it kicks ***in 3D... It also accelerates 2D, but is a
mid-pack performer in that respect... For $160 (when you
send Diamond your old card - see www.diamondmm.com for
details on their "trade-in" program...), I think it's a great deal...

The Canopus Total 3D is also RIVA 128, but is about $70 to
$100 more... Number Nine's Revolution 3D also got good
reviews (about $250) and has consistently been the fastest
2D card I've read about... (of course, all this depends on how
much of what you read do you believe?) The Number Nine
card is based on their own chip set, though... that makes me
a little leary... Another RIVA 128 based card that got good
reviews is the STB Velocity 128.

Eric Busch seems to know quite a bit about this sort of thing,
so if I've passed along any bad information, hopefully he will
straighten me out... (Eric? Please? :-) )

Based on the price/performance ratio, I have settled on the
Diamond Viper 330... I'll post what I find out about it when I
pick it up... (I've got the AGP version on my work computer,
which is a P2, 266, and it kicks butt... However, I'll need to
PCI version for my home computer which is only a P-133...
If it doesn't help much, I'll send it back, I suppose, and put
the money towards a new computer........)
