One of my friends gave it to me and I just installed the new patch
which is supposed to fix a problem with "sticky" walls and some
control issues.
Whatever control issue it fixed, it didn't fix the main one -that the
game forces you to use combined axis (as far as I can tell).
You should have the option of using split axis in any driving program
that is even semi-serious.
The engine models some neat stuff. The lighting is really sharp, even
though the graphics look kind of pixelated at 800x600 vs. N3's clear,
sharp graphics at the same resolution.
Its tough to explain for those that haven't seen it.
The track and wall textures just have a funky outline that makes them
all mish-mash together in the distance.
The real killer for me is the grip. Since it is a true 3D model, and
the cars can leave the ground, its a shame you can go full throttle
through turns and not have the car do anything more than squeal the
tires. Watching the computers go through the road courses is a joke.
It looks like a N3 replay on fast forward.
I'm not into picking a game apart for not being ultra realistic if
it's fun to play, but there are just a few too many really odd quirks
in NASCAR 2000 that take the fun out of it for me.
If someone could do some editing on the driving model to make it more
realistic like the Advanced Options Editor for SCGT, this game could
possibly holds it's own against N3.

You're right about that, Tim. I can't stand having to go into the
Windows controller setup to change my TSW from 3 axis to 2 axis just to
play this thing. I had the same problem with SCGT, but found out (in
this NG) that holding down the brake pedal while starting the game
forced it to recognize the controller correctly. That doesn't seem to
work with N2k. Also, something happens when I start this game... the
splash screen comes on, then the CD-ROM drive starts this speed-up,
slow-down cycle and the game never starts. I have to open the CD-ROM
drawer and close it to get it to start. After that, it runs ok. I get
the same thing with all of my other EA games: F1 2000 and NFS-PU, but
no other sim I have does that so I don't suspect my CD-ROM drive. Does
anybody know why it does that?

I've heard there are some incompatibilities with the new protection
schemes that Sierra and EA (Safedisk) are using, and some CDROM
drives.
The alternative to getting a new drive would be to go to
www.gamecopyworld.com , and get the no CD patches for those games.
The only problem with that is that some of them give you a modified
EXE, which pre-dates the latest patch.
