Many people 'out there' would think those who enjoy driving cars in a
simulated world could be described as geeks, nay nerds.  It could therefore
also be assumed that we would also have nerdy, computery jobs.

Of course this is not the case.  For example, I'm a 'Business Analyst'
(whatever that is), although <sniff> I'm soon to be made redundant, and am
considering a slight career change.  Still I.T though.  Hang on....?

What about you guys?

**This is not to be taken personally - i know you didnt say it**

I completely resent the "nerdy image" that is labelled to "computery
jobs".  I mean is an accountant or a train conductor or a gardener any
more "boring" than a nerdy / geeky computer person?  Its hardly the job
that makes someone a "nerd"

I think its mostly jealousy tho, because on the whole people in IT jobs
get a fairly good wage and are fairly interested in their job.

grrr, it just riles me up :)

I am sorry to hear you might become redundant tho :( bad stuff

To answer the question - I am a software engineer (i.e. programmer)

All the best,
Ash

I always find it interesting to learn about peoples backgrounds that I race
and chat with online , etc.    =)

Me,  I have Bachelors degrees in Economics and Finance, and I'm close to
finishing my MBA.  However, I am the Marketing & Technology Manager (This is
probably as 'non-describing' as your title as I also act as Fraud &
Compliance Officer <G>) for a $85 million asset size Credit Union.

I got interested in computers/technology back in 92 when I was put in charge
of a computer lab on campus as a work/study while in college.  Back when
Mosaic was the all text browser, and telnet, gopher, IRC and Mudding on the
lab's Sun Sparc stations ruled my evenings.   ;)

Transport Research.

Up until now I have mostly been developing strategic transport models
with some obscure software (2500 users worldwide), but this year I
will also make 3D scenarios for our full-scale car and truck sim with
3D studio and Multigen. I'm not complaining :)

So I guess my job is computery, although apart from one mandatory
Turbo Pascal course at the university, I have no IT education.

Hey! Welcome to unemployment! Me? I was made redundant a few months ago. I

lowly call center tech nearly two years ago. The IT Field sucks around here
(i'm in the bay area...close enough to Silicon Valley to smell the burning
leftovers of the IT boom), so i've just been kicking back and taking my time
figuring out where to go next. No, i'm not a nerd...i'm a geek, thanks.  =)

There I was buying advance tickets for Lord of the Rings, I knew the
opening shows would be sellouts so I prebought for Sunday Afternoon.  But
that Friday night, a Geek/Nerd was desperately trying to find a theatre that
still had tickets...I felt bad for him until I remembered.....

lmao!  True, true. I'll always maintain, however, that a geek is one who
still has a social life and can at least border on being cool. hahaha..  =)

I'm an IT Project Manager in the Financial sector. I don't code or do technical
stuff, I'm just supposed to know enough to communicate intelligently with the
techs as well as management. :-)
