Ok, I downloaded the imporved Smoke patch for Nascar2. I did as the
instructions said, unpacking, replacing, repacking but when I am done, it
shows me that the new file I made (effects.pck was defined by the
instructor) is only about 3.7 Kb while the original effects.dat is roughly
775Kb. What went wrong? It won't work!

If I remember correctly, I found it at the US Pits. If that's not the
correct location, it might have been at Yellow Flag.

I applied the patch with no problems. I just unpacked my effects.dat,
overwrote the files in question and repacked the .dat file. Worked fine for
me. I must add, however, that this has been several weeks ago, and the
patch may have changed.

ya hafta pack the files back. .pck is the pack header or something like it.
Run pack effects.pck (I hope you kept all the files that were extracted?)
