NASCAR 2003 Oddity...

My Direct 3D doesn't work!

First, my system specs:

AMD Duron 900
512MB PC133 SDRAM
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 (latest drivers)
BFG GeForce FX 5500 (61.12 drivers - please, no jokes about how s****y
this card is!)

Anyway, whenever I try to run in Direct 3D, the game starts running
fine, but within a lap or two, the graphics become completely distorted
and unviewable.  OpenGL is the only way I can run this game!  Any
suggestions (short of replacing the vid card, which isn't an option for
me right now) would be appreciated!

TIA,

Bob

Try an older revision of the drivers, maybe?  Is the card running hot, perhaps?
That might explain why it starts off fine, then screws up...

Well, Eldred, I've tried older drivers, including the 56.72 WHQL's, and
still have the same problem.  I don't know whether the card's running
hot or not.  Didn't NVIDIA's drivers used to have a panel where it
showed the temp of the card?  I don't have that tab anymore.

So, other than a full R&R (Reformat & Reinstall), any suggestions?

Open the case, with the computer on, and put your hand close to the heatsink on the video card.  If it seems like it would burn you hand if you actually touched it then it's too hot!

If that is indeed the case then think about mounting a fan on the heatsink (if one isn't already there, or got a slot fan to blow out the excess heat.

OpenGL is the best and fastest way to run it with an Nvidia Card anyway.

I'm running 53.04 drivers.  I've never seen a info panel with temp, but I have
a Ti4600.

No...sorry.

Never been able to run it on mine...  Well - it runs, but it runs MUCH slower.

Just the opposite here. Runs much slower and looks horrible in D3D.

Eldred you are the 1st person I have ever heard say you can't run OpenGL on
your nVidia card, all the GPLer's, in fact pretty much any game that has
OpenGL as an alternative to D3d says that OpenGL is quite an improvement
performance wise on nVidia cards.

Hmmm.. does it crash when doing any other graphic intense things? If you try
to run some huge graphic stuff for a long time and it crashes too.. then I
would check your video card heatsink/fan. See if the fan is working
properly, maybe take it out and give it a nice cleaning. Also make sure that
the heatsink is properly attached.

This is just a wild guess, but for your card, maybe older drivers like
28.xx or 30.xx are the better choice?

I had that card two years ago and it almost worked better in OpenGL than
in D3D btw, so if D3D doesn't work, it's not much of a loss in N2k3. D3D
looked a little nicer but OpenGL had somewhat higher fps.

I get the same results in GPL or N2k3.  In GPL, it's absolutely unplayable in
OGL(3-7 fps).  I can't remember exactly how much it dropped in N2k3, but it's
unacceptable.  It would appear that I'm the *only* person experiencing this.
Not sure why - a fresh install of windows yielded the same results.
I guess I'm just lucky... :-(

Achim,

You had a 5500 two years ago?  I thought the 5500 was a newer card.

I think it is too.  He must be thinking about a Voodoo 5 5500

I get glitchs with some tracks in OGL with my ancient GF3 Ti200. No
probs with D3D.
