" my friend in taiwan already got GT4 from blockbuster today after 4PM.
anyway, they told me some good news about GT4:
480p,1080i not only for photo mode, even in the racing. fully support

I find that very hard to believe. The PS2 is hard pressing running most
games at 480p. A game like GT4 which pushes the aging PS2 to its limits
running at 1080i, I think not. I suspect its only the cgi videos that
runs at hdtv resolutions. Also, I thought GT4 wasn't out yet anywhere...
including Japan and Asia???

GT4 has 1080i gameplay

by Mark McNult » Wed, 29 Dec 2004 09:01:15

It was announced that GT4 does not support progressive scan. I am one of the
first to say I would loveit to run in 480p but it is not to happen this time
around.  GT4 is pushing the PS2 to a very high level and it was a dropped
feature.

I read through it. Looks to me like an elaborate hoax. I won't believe
it until I see it with my own eyes or Sony confirms it in an official
statement.

Okay, that's fair enough. I won't believe it until I'm playing it at 1080i
myself.

I just hope it supports 480P. If 1080i is supported then I will just have to
spank the monkey in its honor many times.

it's supposed to be both 1080i  *and* 480p.   the 480p part is basicly 100%
certain. don't worry about that.

I have heard that the 1080i support is just for some sort of photo mode.
There will be more on this at http://www.hdtvarcade.com soon.

Those 480p vs 1080i comparison screens show very low-resolution textures.  I
mean really low-res, they look like something coming out of the 3dfx patch
for Nascar Racing 2.  Shameful for 2004(5).

It seems like you can play with 1080i.
I find this shoot at Japanese BBS, impressive one!

GT4 has 1080i gameplay

by Mark McNult » Thu, 30 Dec 2004 12:09:38

From IGN:

We already mentioned that GT4 has real human drivers with motion-captured
animations, but, like the vehicles, another area that receives a bump in
visuals are the billboard-based spectators on the side of the track. It was
announced that these road-side spectators will be fully modeled for the
final game. This wasn't hinted at, it was confirmed and we'll hold Polyphony
to it. We thought the visual magic was coming to an end, but it seems to be
just started as Polyphony is practically pushing the envelope off a cliff.
But with all the eye-candy going on there will be no progressive scan mode.
It was stated that the game actually looks worst in progressive scan as many
of the effects have to be turned off to make the mode work.

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/515/515023p1.html

I am looking for the newer report I read.  Now, I will concede that they may
have found a way to get it to work but I remember reading an interview where
the devs said there would be no progresive can this time around.

Uh, running it on any kind of TV (especially ones that would make it
possible to enter 1080i mode) doesn't change the fact that on all the
screenshots I've seen of GT4, the textures are incredibly low-res.  Think
almost 4-bit tree or billboard textures from GPL when it was released.  That
was in 1998.
