CH Pedals -- HELP!!

by Walter Chan » Wed, 08 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I bought a CH Pro Pedals to go with my LWFF wheel, thinking that with this
combo, I can probably do Monza in 1:30 going in reverse.  But before I can
break any world records, I need to get CH Pedals to work first!!

After connecting the Pedals to the game port of my Soundblaster Live! Value
and my MSSWFF joystick to the gameport extension, going into Control Panel
to have a look: both pedals and joystick are not connected, the LWFF wheel
is working ok.  I tried everything, including advices I saw earlier in a
post about CH Pedals and Sound Blaster Live!.  I deleted the sound card
driver and reboot so that PnP can do a reinstall, I have tried both
connecting and disconnecting the joystick from the CH Pedals game port
extension, I have created 2 two-axis 2-button joysticks and hoping that
would've worked.  None did.

However, I know my gameport is working because if I go into GPL and use
generic input, I can see my CH pedals.  But since my LWFF is on USB, I can
not steer.  Another thing, my MSSWFF joystick was working fine before I got
my LWFF wheel.  So this is not a problem with either MSSWFF joystick nor CH
pedals, just the combination that some how mess up the chemistry in my PC.

Well, I need help to break some world records.  If there is any kind soul
who has experienced the same problem, please advice!!

If you can see your pedals in GPL, you should be alright. There is a second
page in the GPL calibration screen that you can get to with the arrow at the
bottom of the first screen. Your wheel will show up there as axis 7 or 8
probably.

Personally, I'd ditch the joystick, install two copies of a custom 2 axis
controller at IDs 1 and 2, the LTFF at ID 3, and go for it. I suspect the MS
joystick screws things up. I can't make my CH pedals work with my MS
Precision Pro either.

BTW, are you using LW profiler?  It always sets LTFF ID back to ID 1.

CH Pedals -- HELP!!

I'm not using the Profiler at the moment. It introduces a dead zone into the
wheel that I can't drive GPL with. You can uninstall the Profiler, at least
up to version 3.25, and everything works fine. You do lose the programmable
buttons, which is a shame.

I have used the Profiler before, and I didn't have the re-set to ID 1
problem. Again, it was only up to 3.25 though. Do you have an old cheap
joystick, rather than the MS one? That should work.

I eventually wired my CH pedals into my LTFF wheel. It is a little messier
with the FF wheel, but still not too hard. Then you can use the set-up with
any driving sim.

You'll want to get a tennis ball under that CH brake pedal. I cut a 1"
vertical slot in mine, and then duct tape it to the pedal.

Good luck!

Kevin

yeh, i thought about rewiring the CH pedals to LTFF wheel.  besides the
mess, is it straight forward?  thanks for all your help!

There are short wires that go between the two pots in the LTFF pedal
base. These wires have to be lenghtened to reach between the two pots in
the CH pedals, either by soldering in a new length of wire, or using
crimp connectors.

You also have to find somewhere to mount the power input jack. I just
enlarged the hole for the single/split axis on the CH pedal base, and
epoxied it in there.

You will have to enlarge the wire slots in the CH base a bit, but this
is easy to do with a utility knife.

I managed to squeeze the EMC ***on the power wires into the space in
the CH pedal base, but it takes a bit of wire arranging.

Overall not as easy as the non-FF Logitech, but still only about an hour
of fiddling.

CH Pedals -- HELP!!

I also have a LWFF and CH Pedals which are connected to an L4 PDPI,
which gives me a lot of precision for both braking and accelerating.
But the only problem is that I end up with 2 sets of pedal underneath
the desk. If I connected the CH Pedals to the LWFF would still be able
to connect the pedals to the PDPI port? If not, do the pedals behave
int he same manner regardless of what they're connected to?
I have another pc that doesn't have the pdpi port but its similar in
hardware and I also was unable to get the pedals working with any MS
product in fact (MSFF and 3 other joysticks).
Having the LWFF crappy pedal permanently underneath my desk is very
annoying indeed. Last question: do you know any web sites that would
give you graphs on how to do the wiring and everything else when you
connect the ch pedals to the LWFF? Also what sort of tools and/or
equipment do you need to do this?

Many thanks.

Mauricio.

I don't know of any web sites with wiring details. I just put the
connectors on the CH pots the same as they were on the LT ones. I think
the brake ends up backwards, and I had to switch the outer two around on
the brake pot. Might be something at Eric Cote's site.

If the CH pedals are wired in the same as the Logitech ones using the
Logitech wiring harness, they just go through the USB port. This should
be better than any game port for precision and CPU utilization. The
pedals behave perfectly.

You'll need a utility knife, some 22 guage (approximately) wire, a
soldering iron or crimp connectors, a small Philips***driver, and
some epoxy to mount the input power connector, and a little creativity.

Allison's GPL site http://www.racesimcentral.net/
on the CH pedal conversion written by Steve Blankenship. From the main page
go to, Help/ Controllers/ Reader Reports, to check out Steve's report.

I did my conversion back in June while listening to the 24 Hours of Le Mans
on the internet, I needed something to do at 3 AM<g>. The conversion works
great in every sim I've tried. I never think about the pedals anymore.

Thanks for the info Kevin, I will try this out this weekend, I can't
wait to put the LWFF pedals in the bin!
Because that's where they belong.
