Need help with NASCAR 4, please!

I am can't for the life of me get N4 running with decent frame rates.  I
have to turn just about everything off, or turn on low in order to keep
everything from being so choppy.  N3 runs with all eye candy on, but it's a
no-go got N4, and GPL.  I bought this system primarily with hopes of playing
N4.  Could I be in need of some cooling fans?

Here are the specs:
933 PIII
128 MB SDRAM at 133 MHz
SB Live Value Digital
32MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 4X AGP
Windows ME

P.S.  How do I get rid of the NVIDIA logo in the right corner of N3?

Thanks,  Mike

You should get very decent framerates with that system Mike. I am running N4
on a Celeron 566 running at 960 mhz and a Geforce2 MX vid card.
Granted, I turn world detail down and drawing distance at 50%, but it makes
my framerates very driveable - 30 fps and up.
Are you running it in Open GL or d3d? Are you trying to run it in 32 bit
color as opposed to 16? 32 bit color will really slow things down.
Try running it in Open Gl, vsync and anti-alias off, and 16 bit color first.
Then play with your graphics settings within N4 to get a comfortable fps.
You should be able to get very decent results. Keep in mind though N4 is
very graphics/cpu intensive, and I doubt there is a machine out there yet
that can run everything at the max, in 32 bit color and anti-aliasing on.

Don,
I am running 800 X 600 X16, Open GL.
world detail is about 25-30%
Car detail - med
Draw 30%
Mirror 10%
Opp draw 12
mirror draw 3
mirror objects med
trackside objects - some

The best I can get is 25 FPS
, sometimes down to 5-6.  When I am involved in a wreck, the screen just
freezes for a moment, then advances frame by frame.

Thanks for the response.

Something is seriously out of whack on your system.

How many AI cars are you using?
What video drivers are you using?
What are your OpenGL settings?
You should get at least double that frame rate considering you have
everything turned down in the game.

Marc.

Hmmm, you got a problem somewhere, you should be getting much better
framerates than that with those settings.

Btw, I had a typo in original response, my Celeron 566 is running at 850
mhz, not 960 . I would think you should be easily in the 40's-50's with your
settings. You got anti aliasing off in your Nvidia Open Gl properties?

I generally get 20 - 35 FPS with a 600MHZ P3 and a voodoo 5, with most of
the visuals turned down quite a bit, but none turned off. I have also
noticed that the biggest way to improve framerate is to cut back on A.I.
opponents. My frame rates are in single digits if I use a 43 car field. I
just kept reducing the field until I got tolerable framerates, which for my
system is about 16 A.I. opponents. Try reducing the field.

I agree that there is something not right with your system settings (
probably graphics card ) if what you say is correct regarding your game
settings. Another 128meg or more of ram wouldn't hurt either.

Just for kicks try turning off sound, see if it's better.

If this fixes it try downloading new sound drivers.
It worked for me anyway.

Hope it helps.

As Don also mentioned, make sure that you have FSAA Off, that is a big
framerate hog

Set your card to 16 bit color.

Set the maximum number of cars in a race to ~21.

Set the maximum cars visible forward to ~18, in mirror to ~3.

In your n4 directory...
Edit core.ini...change  MaxBlockSize to 384072 (stops the 8-9 frames a
second during a crash).

Edit RendOGL.ini or Rend_3d3.ini (depending on what your using) and change
the line for TextureSetSize=a few million less like 27412288 to 24412288
(this last one stops the little momentary hiccups from agp texture
swapping).

You really could use more memory too.

On 800mhz cpu, G-force 2, and soundblaster live I guess about
4-5 fps on average in a pack of cars, from 35 to 30. But with 3d-sound on I
get
fps-drops down to 8-10 sometimes, mostly after a few laps.
