N4 is fun but...

by Tony Jeste » Mon, 12 Feb 2001 14:14:32

I just brought N4 home from EB and spent the last hour at Watkins Glen.
Acutally I was pleasantly surprised.  I expected worse.  Except for the
restricted visability which I think detracts a lot from the fun of
driving, N4 is quite fun, and I'm still using an overclocked Celeron A.
BUT THEN I exited N4 and went to ANOTHER Watkins Glen, this time in a
bright red Ferrari...WOW!! what a difference.  The way you can just
throw that car around is absolutely thrilling in comparison.  The
responsivness and realism are incredible.  Long live GPL.  Will there
ever be another sim as good?  Maybe some day.  But I bet it'll be a lot
longer than most people think.

N4 _is_ fun though... gotta go try out some more tracks...

Throwing a stock car with those wide tires is going to be a lot
different than doing it with a casket on wheels (thins ones at that).

The braking distance on the back straight at the Glen when going 180+mph
to the chicane is killer, it is really long and makes good outbraking
battles.

It is a rush trying to slow down a 3400lb car from 180+mph to 80. Just
imagine some GPL tracks in N4. :)

Speaking of GPL tracks, anybody been successful transfering them to N4?
I tried Mosport; I edited the calendar and copied some of the files
found in the Watkins Glen directory. Still can't load the track. GRRR...

Track format is a bit different I think, and 3do's are made with 3D Studio
Max -type of software (GPL's 3dos were made by very buggy and restrictive
old software, and the format has changed because of that....)

It's going to need time to convert those tracks, although the physics model
is the same. Kind of sad when they applied the new graphics engine, because
it would have been easy to convert the tracks from gpl-engine to another
gpl-engine.

I am happy that the two types of cars are modelled pretty accurately.  The
old F1 cars are thoroughbreds compared to the workhorse NASCAR vehicles,
though, you have to admit.

Today's NASCAR vehicle probably has more in common with a 1960's
American-made pick-up truck than it does with a common road car from
toady...or an old F1 car.

Marc.

Here we go <sigh>.  Yes, we all know that GPL is the greatest thing
since sliced bread, and will be until the end of time.  It's
unecessary for you GPL zealots to go on and on and on.........and on
and on and on.  We get the message.  Enough already!

Remember that Nascar's have a lot more weight to them, so they feel a
lot heavier and less nimble. But a lot of that feel is in the setup,
too,
getting a good balanced setup that turns nicely helps a lot. It only
took me 6 months or so of occaisional messing around to come up with a
setup that felt decent, and then these big, heavy beasts started to be
fun to drive at the road courses. The Glen replay on the CD is one of my
cleanest and fastest laps there. (70 degrees, sunny, no wind, race
engine).

If you prefer the type of racing that GPL presents over Nascar, then NO
Nascar Simulator will ever change your mind.

It's two totally different types of racing.  Some like one, some like the
other.  I like both.  I prefer Nascar...

A modern-Day Cart/F1 sim based on the GPL/N4 engine could be very, very
sweet though :)

N4  is very impressive with the right computer. In fact 60-100 fps
makes the default 36 in GPL make it seem like it crawls. I keep
looking at the frame rate counter and thinking GPL feels different
now.

Larry, they (Papyrus) did modern CART sims.  Only problem they had was not
enough (I'm not going to say 'many' because I have both of their Indycar
releases) people would buy them to be a 'commercial' success.  Sad but true.
With the CART/IRL split, it's doubtful that all those of us who did buy the
first two would get the third.  I'm not going to say which I prefer (although
I'll be at the Naz in May), but I would certainly buy the third edition if it
ever came out.
