Burnout problems

When I congfigure my sound my system locks up. Quite often when I'm playing
the game it will just exit. When I'm trying to race I can load my setup but
it will change back to the SPAM setup before I race. I'm running the
software graphics and my game IS patched. Can anyone help me out?
