F1 2000 tire wear & temps.

I just did 25 total laps at silverstone. 12 on hard compound and
13 on soft. I could feel a huge difference in grip by changing the
tire compounds. I certainly did not feel as much of an effect when
I tried that with F1RS. And GP2 was so long ago I just forget :-)
Anyway, that was totally cool (feeling the difference in compounds).

Tire wear:
Has anyone seen the 4 green bars next to the tires change color?
I never have and I am wondering if this really works. I believe I can
start to feel the tires going away because of how they react in the
corners, but I never see the color change. Or are these green
bars indicators that get smaller? Well I haven't seen them get
smaller either. Hey, maybe I am good on tires like Alain Prost
was?

Tire Temp:
As was stated here many times, with the tire temp indicators on
the wheel turns red, you start spinning out as the tires are very
greasy feeling. Yep, this is true alright. As long as you use
HARD compound that is how it is. Try switching to SOFT
compound tires, and you will see that you will get maximum
grip when your tires are red. With hard compound you seem
to get maximum grip with purple.

Hi Greg,

I have never seen the 4 green bars change color, I think this is broken
-( I hope ISI will address this in a patch, or perhaps Anon9 could help
us...

hm, will try the soft compound right away, this tire temp problem is driving
me nuts, it is impossible to drive a full (100%) Grand Prix on hard tires,
after 10 laps you lose grip, and have to pit every 5 times during a race at
Silverstone. Hope it works on the soft tires....

BTW, by changing the carsetup and your driving style it is possible to do
about 15 laps on hard tires, that would be a 3 stop strategy...

Yes, I was running a 20 lap stint in a race at Silverstone, on soft tires.
Around lap 15 I could sense the tires going away. I was thinking about being
real careful for the next 5 laps, when I decided, what the heck lets see
what happens if I really push it. At lap 18 the left front tire bar went
yellow. The other three remained green. With all the right turns at
Silverstone, and the way I was abusing the tires while experiencing
understeer I expect the left front to go first. I went in for new tires
before the other tires bars changed.

I've been running soft tires at Silverstone testing.  I find that once the
indicator turns bright red, the rears spin out a lot more readily when
applying power in turns.  This with default setting (except the tires, 46/54
brake bias, 12 laps of fuel).  By about the 6th lap, I start getting the red,
much earlier than on other tracks.  I'm running mid-1:25's.

I don't think you should be able to run a full GP on a single set of tires, at
least not at a competitive pace.  F1 teams always do at least one pit stop.

As for the tire temperatures , it's not to bad to have them red. Red is the
'race' temperature and you can have maximum grip at this time. Play with
rideheight and dampers to keep 'm red. 1:24:915 at Silverstone is done with
redhot tires :)

I have done some mid 1:22's but find they always come on the second or third
lap just before the rear tyres get bright red (this with tyre wear off, soft
compound tyres, fuel usage off and 10 litres fuel) - after that I never seem
to be able to get below the mid 1:23's. It seems there is a critical temp
for maximum grip.
Cheers, Andrew.

| Has anyone seen the 4 green bars next to the tires change color?

I did a few donuts and the rear tires did - its quite a subtle change - not
one second green, the next yellow

FWIW, I went 21 laps one time, and it wasn't
even too bad.  You just have to dial a lot
of understeer into the setup, with little
front downforce.
