N2 Rendition @ 5fps - Help!

by Don Chapma » Tue, 15 Sep 1998 04:00:00

System Specs:
PII 266, 64mb ram, Intergraph Intense 3D Rendition card, Canopus Pure 3D
Voodoo2, Xitel Storm VX PCI soundcard/joystick port, Thrustmaster Nascar Pro
steering wheel - All hardware is running most recent drivers as downloaded
from each companies web sites.
N2 Rendition with Grand National Expansion Pack installed.
All details set on full,  except for grass/asphalt.
10 cars ahead, 2 behind.
Tried Running Rendition version through Win95 and booting to DOS, as well as
3DFX version.
Either way, the game runs extremely slow on any given track. On some ovals,
like Gateway, it is a complete slideshow and undrivable all the way around
the track. On road courses it is terrible at start/finish line, and in front
of stands, but speeds up when there is no traffic. I have re-installed
twice. The strangest thing is that Rendition Indycar 2 screams along at full
detail with a full field of cars, no problem. Rendition GPL demo is fast as
well. Even Rendition SODA plays faster than N2 is currently.
Quake 2, Unreal, Sin demo, NCAA 99, Jedi Knight, all play great on this same
setup. Even more interesting is that Nascar 2 is very playable on my P166,
32mb ram, Intergraph Rendtion card with the same detail settings. That
machine has a soundblaster 16 and I use a old T2 for wheel. It just doesn't
make sense. I am sure I have setup something wrong but I have no idea what
it could be. I have had N2 installed on the P166 machine since the day it
was released(almost 2 years ago), and have not encountered any of these
problems. I even tried just copying over the exact N2 directory from the
P166 machine, to the PII 266, and still had the same problems. The PII is
not overclocked and is an original 266(not Celeron). Any help, or insight
would be greatly appreciated.

N2 Rendition @ 5fps - Help!

  I have a P200 with a V2100 DSII.  I can run through win95 with more cars
and all detail and
no slowdown..So we should be able to do something for you.
First make sure you are running the dma version of NCR2.  It "IS" faster.
Also choose the 4 bit
textures.  so if your are in dos type:
Renddma -4

alternately edit the renddma.bat file to include the above.  I use a
shortcut to go to N2 rather than the
menu choices from the start button.
Also go to the Sierra site and download their 3dfx patch.  It probably
won't look as nice as the
Rendition verison but should be a ***y, tiny bit faster.   Goodluck.  check
back and let us know
how it goes.

N2 Rendition @ 5fps - Help!

Thanks to everyone that provided help regarding the -4 -dma parameter
settings, that did the trick! I don't know how I missed it in the readme
file. Upon further review, I actually discovered that I had created a
shortcut with those parameters, but it was locking up every time I tried to
run it. It was a "boot to dos" shortcut that was passing my old sound card
parameters. Once I changed it back to using the current MD-DOS
configuration, it worked great. Thanks again.
