I got a copy of the 21.81 Detonater drivers today and to my amazement they
have made an 18% improvement in benchmark performance.

Great. But what kind of video card do you have? Apparently this matters
(i.e., G2 vs. G3).

I got about a 15% boost with my Gforce2 ultra

But, do you get performance increases in actual games?  That's the issue.

It's an Elsa Gladiac 920 (GF3).

Ah, well, I'm not really sure, it's so fast anyway.

I've got a regular GeForce 2 GTS, 64 meg card but also run McAfee VirusScan
and after loading the drivers the damn thing blue screened on me!!!

I had to give the pc the 3 fingered salute which then caused it to boot to
safe mode!!!!

Went back to 12.41 CERTIFIED! drivers and everything is fine again.... I'll
wait until the version 21.x.x come out that are certified.

Installed the new drivers last night in place of my Leadtek
provided drivers. I ran both 3dMark2000 and 2001, from a fresh
boot before and after installing. My results were disappointing.
Minimal improvement. 2000 gained 21 marks and 2001 gained 86
marks, but many of the individual tests actually went down in
their frames per second rates (while others went up just enough
to bring the balance slightly into the positive range).

Sounds like what happened to me when I upgraded to detonator 3
my quake2 frame rates dropped 25%, but since the older video
drivers are incompatible with some games, I'm forced to use the
slower newer ones.

I have a feeling they may be rewritten to take advantage of fast
CPUs, but if you don't have one the new code can create bottle
necks.

strange.  I went from ~4800 to ~5400.  frame rates fluctuate far less
now, and, perhaps the biggest surprise; the nature demo went from ~20
FPS to never dipping below 30.  cool stuff.

GF3, though.

Did you disable the virus software before installing? The instructions
were pretty specific about that. Perhaps one of the files that the driver
uses, didn't get updated, the partial install could cause all kinds of
grief. Perhaps installing again with your virus software disabled.

Hope this helps

Yep.. I used task manager to "end task" each of the McAfee Virusscan
programs before installing, in fact I had all programs save my firewall
(Black Ice) disabled and it seemed to install just fine.

It was after a cold boot that things went downhill..

I think it depends greatly on what card you have.  I think I read in
one of the previews that GeForce3s would see the most improvement,
with diminishing gains the older your card gets (I think gf2's were
supposed to get ok improvements, while gf1's get pretty much nothing).
haven't checked benchmarks on my gf1 sdr (eeeeeeeeeeew), but it
doesn't 'feel' a heap worse (was running 8.05 b4 as i'm using dx7
games mostly atm).

I got the new 21.81 drivers and although everything else is fine, 3D Mark
2001 refuses to finish all of its tests. It gets so far, about test 12 of 20
and then just stops with a blank screen. I've tried re-installing it but it
doesn't help.

Any ideas?
