Worth it to update Nvidia drivers?

by James Harmo » Sun, 23 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I'm running  3.53 drivers and wondering if I should update to 3.68 drivers
for my CL TNT2 card.  I've heard that each update actually makes things run
slower.  Is that true?  Basically I'm trying to improve GPL performance.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

I've tried all of them except the latest, and have always gone back to 2.08

Worth it to update Nvidia drivers?

I'm not really sure what nvidia is trying to accomplish with all the new
drivers. I don't have Q3 so I'm not sure if they are trying to tune all the
new drivers for that one game. The reality is that GPL with the OpenGL patch
may play best on the 3.53 driver. Smoother than the 2.08 driver. But all
other games suffer terribly in frame rate, both in OpenGL and D3D. The 2.08
driver is really much faster. I don't remember where, but one nvidia driver
site had a comparison of driver speeds, and the marginal winner was version
1.76, with 2.08 a close second. It might be worth trying to find the old
1.76 driver and give it a try in GPL. With the 3.53  driver, games like
Midtown Madness are almost unplayable, and UT will have reduced frame rates.
So yes, the new drivers after 2.08 are slower. This would seem to defy logic
unless nvidia is trying to optimize the drivers for one particular game or
are trying to cure lock-up problems.
