nVidia driver question

by GTX_SlotCa » Mon, 15 Jan 2001 04:23:42

I'm putting together a relatively low power computer for someone that will
only play occasional games. The GeForce2 MX came with driver version 5.34.
Everything works great. I upgraded to 631. Q2 went from 70 fps to 113. Nice
increase. But, Nascar Heat  won't run. It loads, but when you start a race
or benchmark, it never gets past the "Loading" screen before it locks up.
Games aren't important on this computer, but I still want the best solution.
Besides using the older drivers, can anyone offer and help? Oh, I switch
back to 5.34 drivers and everything is fine again.

Oops. Nevermind. The 631 drivers loaded default as not syncing the refresh
rate, I assume. Anyway, with both drivers and the same settings the fps went
up. Rather than fight a VIA chipset (motherboard) and new video drivers,
I'll leave well enough alone ;)

Dunno if this is related, but I got some weird problems in various 3D
apps/games if I didn't go into "add/remove programs" and uninstalled
the nVidia drivers before I upgraded from 5.x to 6.x

On another note

I had a voodoo 2 12 meg card with a 4 meg video card,   I bought a tnt2 m64
card,  with some games I am actually getting less fps. Drivers that I am
using are 4.12.01.0377                   02/08/200

The Detonator 3 drivers are 4.12.01.631
I also have an M64 card. It worked great with my P2/400, but I just
upgraded to a P3/866 and noticed I've hit the wall frame rate wise.
There is no way I'm spending $400+ on a video card, so I'll probably
go out and get a Geforce MX card today.

In my post I didn't say that I did remove the old drivers first (completely)
and their software and installed the standard PCI drivers each time I
switched. I suspect it has more to do with the VIA chipset on the Asus P3V4X
motherboard. I used the GeForce2 MX with an Abit BE62 motherboard with no
problems. That chipset also made it impossible for me to use the Sonic
Impact 90 soundcard I had on the shelf. So, it's back to Abit from now on
for me. (you never know unless you try, right?)
I think that for lower end systems like this, I'll probably go with an
older GeForce 256 (not MX) for about the same price as a new MX. Should be
faster.

Some detonator drivers are faster than others and some are more compatable
than others. Genarally the later drivers are bettter aas they are getting
quicker and thay are ironing out compatability bugs.

So far I've found that the best are the 6.49 ones.

I've had problems with some games with 7.17 (the new DX 8 ones)

It sounds like you guys either have driver remnants from old video
cards in your \Windows\System directory (some things get left even if
you do an "uninstall"), or you need to play with your AGP aperture size
(this REALLY varies from driver to driver for me on my VIA chipset
Duron system -- some Detonator versions like a 256MB aperture, and some
will only tolerate a 32MB aperture).  The AGP aperture is an easy thing
to swap, but it might take a few reboots and lockups before you hit on
the rignt combination.

I've tried the demo and it worked very well even at 1600x1200. I can't
remember what driver version I was using at the time though.
