Which video card to buy ?

by Fernando Deutsc » Wed, 16 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I am going to make a gift to my young brother and it will be a video
card. Which one would be a good option between 3dfx and Rendition based
video cards ? He plays very diverse games like Cart Racing, Need for Speed
II SE, TOCA, FIFA 98, Quake and some other ones. The video card must include
good OpenGL drivers also. Price is a restriction. I am looking for something
around 100 bucks or less. Please dont flames.

The computer is a Pentium MMX 166 Mhz. 32MB RAM.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi Fernando,

I would suggest a Monster1 3D (with the Voodoo1 chip).  They
are very inexpensive, even retail because of the Voodoo2 cards :)

It will run Cart Racing (with the patch and tri3dfx.dll), NFS2-SE,
TOCA, Quake and I believe FIFA as well :-)

The Monster comes with a mini-OpenGL for use in Quake.

You could splurge and try for a Canopus1 3Dfx card with 6MB.

I'm satisfied with my Monster1 3D; It's your best bet, IMHO.

Jason.

Oops, Cart Racing supports Rendition only; therefore,
it will not be accelerated by the Monster 3D.

I was thinking of CPR from MS *bleck*

Jason.

Go for a Rendition card (Stealth II for instance), it's cheaper and visually
arguably the best... The Verite 2000 has full OpenGL functionality, and runs D3D
quite well! I have one, and I must say that I for the moment don't need
anythinge else, simply because it runs so well...

You should be able to find a Voodoo1 card for under US$80 new!  It will
guarantee the maximum compatability since it will run all D3D, OpenGL
and Glide games.  On a P166 it should accelerate you nicely.
