Buying a new Video Card...

by Jerry W » Tue, 07 May 1996 04:00:00

Hello.  I am thinking of buying a new video card for ICR2.  I was
wondering if you guys can answer a few questions for me before I take
the big plunge (:P).

My current system is a P133 w/ 16 meg ram, 1 meg Cirrus Logic 5434.
It can run ICR2 in DOS, SVGA, with a minor frame rate slowness.  The
setting for the game is everything on, and 31 opponents.  How much
improvement can I get by getting a 2 meg VRAM graphics accelerator?
Is it worth it, for the price that I'll have to pay?

Thanks for answering the above questions.  Your help is very
appreciated.

How much can you afford?  I got one of the new 128 bit cards with 2
meg of RAM and all my slow frame rate problems disappeared (and I'm
only running a P90 with 16 meg).  The card was in the upper 300's FYI.

I've got a P90 with a Trident VGA.  Would a Stealth 64 work well?  I mean,
would it really be worth the cost?  Just asking...

That was part of the question.  I wanted to know the price/performance
rating, before I spend any money.  I have relatively fast frame-rate,
as far as I can tell, but with the upcoming Win95 vresion, who knows.
The ability for me to play the game under Win95 (no exit to dos) with
SVGA is a plus too, that's the reason why I can a new video card.

I currently use a Stealth64 PCI card with 2mb VRAM but am
considering upgrading to 4mb since I can swap my card with a 4mb card at
work. Someone ordered 4mb cards here and they weren't necessary. Even
less so when we use Sun and SGI workstations (we've only got 3 PC's).
Also, I'm using the new Diamond drivers for Win95 with the "In Control"
tool kit. Downloaded the driver and the tools from their corporate site.
with it, I'm running (on a P90) 25fps with 24 opponents and
grass/asphalt textures off. Anyone think the extra 2mb of VRAM will
help?

Have a look at the hardware section of the WWW sim-racing magazine "Sim
Racing News". It covers the best graphics cards for NASCAR, ICR2 and
F1GP. The WWW address is below in my .sig.

Cheers!

Which one?
Reason I ask is becuse I am currently running a Trident 9440 (2meg) on a
p150 and am about to testdrive a Matrox 4 meg WRAM card.  I'll let you know
how it goes.

A lot of the veteran beta testers run a Stealth...been looking at profiles!

I'm about to find that out.  let you know by Thursday.

Well, I asked a similar question and got no response, so I did a little
research and decided to buy a Matrox Millenium w/4MB WRAM.  I'm replacing a
Diamond Stealth 64 PCI w/2MB DRAM.  I run ICR2 on a P150 with all details
except grass and track textures at about 26 FPS with 31 opponents when using
my Stealth 64.  I'll post my impressions when my Matrox comes in, hopefully on
Wednesday or Thursday.

I would suggest a #9 Motion 531 or a 771 with at least 2 meg on
either.  The 531 is at a very good price at this time.   The 128 bit
cards are of course better but a LOT more expensive.  Hope my
advice helps!

The extra 2mb of VRAM will do nothing to speed up your video card.
It's only to increase color depth and resolution.
