Screamer on Pentium - what are your video benchmarks?

by Al Cargil » Tue, 04 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Hi

I have just got Screamer and find it great fun in an arcade way!
However I have tried to run it in SVGA mode and it's way to slow on
my DX4/100. I was wondering what sort of benchmarks a decent Pentium
based system gets on the setup menu (I get 31 and 26Mb/s
respectively) and if it gives acceptable refresh rates in SVGA?

Cheers

No. I've got a Pentium 133 (32MB RAM, fast SCSI disk and CD-ROM, good
2MB graphics card), and I can only run it in VGA. SVGA's just too
slow. Need For Speed, on the other hand, runs great in SVGA on my
system (and is a much better game all around).

I have a P-120 and used to have a ATI Mach 64 1mb Dram card. With that
videocard I had 20mb/s in vga and 19mb/s in svga.
It was okay in vga but not in svga. I tried with the new Univbe 5.2
(Scitech Display Doctor) but it did not make any difference. Then I
bought a new cheap Oem 1mb Dram card with a S3 Trio 64 chip on it and
that made a huge difference.
My benchmarks went up to 41mb/s in vga but still 19mb/s in svga. Then
when I tried Univbe 5.2 again the svga benchmark raised to 56mb/s!!!!!
Now the game is playable in svga and I sold the old card for almost as
much as the new one.

I've got a Penitum 133 (Triton II chipset) with a Matrox Millenium
2MB. I get 70 MB/sec in VGA and 64 MB/sec in SVGA. The frame rate in
VGA is just incredible, a whole lot better than on my previous DX4/100
with an S3 864 videocard. I think this frame rate is the maximum the
game and our eyes can do.
In SVGA the game is playable (acceptable frame rate) but if you have
seen VGA, you just can't settle for the lower frame rate in SVGA,
despite the nicer graphics.
I suppose you need a P200 with a Matrox card in order to run it in
SVGA with the maximum frame rate.
