As per title:- I don't have a wheel, but I don't want to have to use a
mouse for steering!

Thanks,

I would say no. Technically it does work but it's almost impossible to
steer.

Rubbish. I have a home-made set of pedals built out of an old Logitech
Wingman Extreme Digital, using the Y & Z axes for the pedals & keeping X for
the occasional game that doesn't support multiple controllers. It works fine
with LFS split axis, and it's much easier for me to catch a slide than using
a wheel.

The latest patch should allow you to assign buttons to the throttle & brake
too, if you don't want to use a regular Joystick's Y-axis.

Steering is no problem, but throttle/brake is a compromise, hence my setup.

Yep. It also works with a PSX dual-shock gamepad. Just turn down the
sensitivity and the steering lock and go for it!
