Having problem with joystick not working in DOS mode games with SB Live!
card.  Loaded Grand Prix 2, tried to calibrate joystick but get no readings
in DOS mode and system locks up in a Win98 DOS window. Tried IndyCar, same
problem but also noticed calibration for joysticks is grayed out, I'm
assuming because the game cannot locate joystick port.

Checked all my setttings, all are correct.  Tried adjusting settings, no
change.  Talked to someone at work with this card, he says his works but he
cannot remember what he had to do to get it to work.

Help!  Racing games suck using the keyboard.

Rob,
If you've overclocked the system that may be the culprit.
Some soundcards don't work well when overclocked and this includes the
gameport on the card.
Otherwise, it sounds like a conflict. Some device is sharing the same i/o
address as the joystick.
Don't depend on windows to tell you where the conflict resides.
Sometimes it doesn't know either!

No, system is not overclocked, and no, there are no i/o address conflicts.

Most DOS racing games had seperate "setup" programs that setup the soundcard..I
know ICR has one, and that requires your soundcard to have some sort of DOS
drivers loaded in the autoexec.bat or dosstart.bat  and usually a
'set blaster to........"  line too.

hope this helps.

A couple ideas for you:
You didn't mention what kind of joystick you're using (you should really try
a wheel, you'll never go back :) ) but I understand that digital controllers
will not work with DOS games.
Also, both GP2 and ICR might be happier running in pure DOS mode, which
means rebooting.  You can change the program properties, advanced, and check
the box that says MS-DOS mode.  This also gives you a place to customize the
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT for when your PC reboots for this program.

Good luck.

Actually, it is a wheel, a Thrustmaster NASCAR Pro.  My bad for calling it a
"mere joystick".  :)

Tried that.  I use system commander to boot between DOS 7 and Windows 98.
Doesn't make a difference.

I'll probably just break down and buy a game card for wheel use.  Until
then, g/f's computer just got Russian Volunteer Army volunteered to run my
older DOS games, like GP2, since it has a SB16 ISA in it.  :)

Well, I know a stick/wheel will work in GP2 with W98 and a SBLive because
I've used a LWFF in the game.  Make sure your controller is device #1 in
Windows, then you have to calibrate in the game.  As others mention, I don't
think a digital device will work.

yeah, if it is a digital wheel, then you'll have to run icr2 in a
window rather than a dos boot.  If you are trying to use the rendition
version,,then good luck...it's one of the mOST finicky programs from the
good ol dos days.

Funny , I thought an LWFF was digital. I'm personally using a MSFF with GP2
in Dos window and SB Live Player and W98SE . It works fine except that I
can't get the brake pedal to work so I'm using one of the buttons . If your
wheel is USB then try the following patch mentioned in a newer thread
"http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~tahatson/Gp2joy9x.zip"

someone mentioned that it had ruined his Nocdrom patch so I haven't tried it
myself yet.
