Diamond Stealth & IR2 (Win95)

I have the Diamond Stealth 3240 card w/ 2MB of VRAM.

I have been getting a lot of video problems with IR2 for Win95.

If I run my display at 24 or 32 bit color, I can not even enter
the program.  If I lower to 16 bit color, all runs fine.

Any ideas?  Anyone else experienced this?  Anyone working with the above
video card?

Thanks!

I have the same video card with a P90 24mg and I run in FULL DOS with ALL
graphics on. I don't know what your setup is, but don't run it in Windows
95 unless you have a P120 and 32mg ram. What processor are you using? You
could wait for the Windows 95 version but I think the requirements will be
up there.

You'll probably get even better perfomance if you drop it down to 256
colours.  That's all ICR2 would be using, and your refresh rate will be
higher too.

I have an STB Powergraph 64 with 2MB EDORAM, and the Win95 version only
runs in 256 colors for me. One of the .txt files says the paintkit won't
run unless it's in 256 colors, so I would assume the same for the actual
game.

Running a P120, 16MB RAM at full detail and 640X480, I get around 20 fps
most of the time, but in heavy traffic it will slow to around 15. If I
switch to 640X400, I can get upwards of 28 fps, dropping to around 20 in
traffic.

As a comparison, in the DOS version (running in DOS mode) I can get 30
fps, with a drop to 26-28 only when I cause a big crash. Not as pretty as
Win95 640X480, but it is smoother.

My two gripes about Win 95 version are these:

1) I get disk swapping during a race!!!! I have no other apps running, so
I will assume 16MB is not enough. It is pretty damn hard to survive a disk
swap when you are in a turn. Right after the disk access, the frame rate
will drop to around 3-5 fps, and the next thing you know you are into the
wall or another car. IT SUCKS!!!! Never had this problem in DOS.

2) I enter a track for a race. Go to garage and load my qualifying setup.
Qualify, then go back to the garage to load my race setup. When I go to
race, my joystick and pedals no longer work. Car just sits there. Exit
out, and try again. Still no input. Re-calibrate, still no luck. I have to
completely exit the game and reload to get them to work. So I end up
qualifying and racing with the same setup. Big deal? Not really. BUT, I
don't have to do it in the DOS version.

Until I can figure out how to stop these two problems (if you have a fix,
LET ME KNOW!!!!), I'll be playing in DOS.

Looks like another "winner"...

Sorry, but "no other apps running" isn't quite right.  If 95 is running, you
ALWAYS have other apps running.    Just *one* of these is the "auto-sizing
swap file."
It's hard to stop Windoze 95 from "disk swapping" whenever it wants to.  By
default, it wants to manage it's own swap file size.   So whenever it wants
to change the size of the swap file - IT WILL.    ...and you wait.
You CAN shut off the variable size swap file, but Windoze will warn you sternly
that IT wants to control it.     For good reason too.   Some have found it
hard to boot up their computer if the size is too small.   On the other hand,
sometimes Windoze "gets stoopid" and continuously changes the size of the swap
file without stopping.   (reboot to fix)

Sorta-Fix:  Set a constant sized swap file.  To keep Windoze from locking up,
you should make it at least 2 times the size of memory.   For 16MB, try 40MB
of swap file.   That will stop that one, but there are other things "running"
that you can't shut down.

I noticed you mentioned twice that
"Never had this problem in DOS" and
"BUT, I don't have to do it in the DOS version."

So...... What's the draw?   Why run the 95 version?   Slower frame rate?
Flakey controls?

What part of it is better?   (besides the interface to the paintkit.)

The disk swapping occurs mainly when windows95 in downsizing your swap
file to minimums...if you set the minimum swapfile size (I cant remember
if its your SYS.INI or WIN.INI file),but you'll find it easy enough,in
one of those two files, to at least 16megs,it will reduce it alot...as
mentioned above...you can go higher if needed...but leave the maximum
figure as it is..
