GPL install error

by Paul Thor » Fri, 28 Mar 2003 04:25:06

Hi guys,

Firstly, I can't say how embarassed I am having to write this, but here
goes.  I am trying to re-install GPL on my machine, I re-built it after a
major HD failure so the new HD is the only different component in the
system/  The install gets to the point just before it trys to install
DirectX and Active Video, and then throws an error "Cannot install
wininet.dll".  The only option is to okay this, then it realises that I've
got a newer version of DX and ActiveVideo.  I've checked my system and
wininet.dll is in my system32 and LastGood folder (obviously), but I can't
seem to find it on the GPL CD, so why/where is it trying to copy to-from?

I have installed a hundred times before, hence the embaressment of asking
for help.  For your interest, I have XP Pro, SB Live (I know about sound
issues for this and have ways around them), GeForce2 (43.30 drivers) ...
this should do you for system info.  Anyone got any ideas, I'm ***ed if I
can't fix this as the update patches don't stop the CTD error.

Many thanks for any help,
Paul T

Well, I've managed to find a backup of the whole GPL folder from about
9months (+) ago ... just copied this over the top of the new install
directory, re-installed the 1.2 & D3D patch and all is well again.

If you want to do a clean install again, you can just copy the files off the
CD. Make sure you turn off the 'read-only' attribute on all the files,
though.
