Apart from a minor issue with NTFS partitions (you need to allow
indexing on the gpl folder) gpl /should/ run fine on XP.
I'd start with the graphics drivers, sound drivers & run dxdiag.exe to
see what's wrong with the way the PC is set up. It could also be that
the PSU isn't powerful enough to run the graphics card in 3D. Use MBM5
(or similar) to check your voltages.
If you get the same problem with more than one game, chances are it's
not the game that's the problem.

There's a pretty comprehensive FAQ here:

Hopefully something in there may help....

THe GPF usually is stated as SOMEPROGRAM caused a GPF in SOME DLL or APP
(module). these 2 terms can be used on Google (search engine) many times to
expose a bug, or virus or driver problem or something. Right now there is
no where near enough information for us, or well me at least as a PC tech to
do anything but "shotgun" some possibilites of any problem, mainly because
someone has to narrow this down a bit.
here's what I would try. Write down the error exactly (maybe post it back
up here so we all can look at it). if you cant post easily from there you
could Search on google for the error and name of whatever the error occured
in. Sure you might find nothing, or you will find 5000 links because the
error is to common to other problems. I contantly search google for such
things.
2nd of all, has he had trouble installing anything else lately, not just
Thunder or GPL? Try weatherdepot or something free/usefull from the net (if
that is available) see if it works just fine?
IIRC it give a message saying "this is not a valid CD" in those
circumstances. Worth a try though.
