Force Feedback Wheels

by Kent R. Frazie » Fri, 31 Jan 2003 12:42:37

I currently have a Microsoft Precision Racing Wheel and I would like to
"upgrade" to a Force Feedback wheel. Although the MS wheel has been
good, I am not a real fan of Microsoft in general and would rather not
give them any more money than necessary. :)

Having said that, I have been looking at the archives in Google and
various web sites, and have pretty much narrowed things down to the
Logitech MOMO Racing or the Logitech MOMO Force.

This will be used almost exclusively for GTR 2002, so I kind of like the
idea of the shifter on the Racing version. Are there any GT class cars
that use paddle shifters? Are they even legal?

It sounds as if the biggest complaint about the Force wheel is the
pedals, but it also appears that I could use my MS pedals if I
understand this web site correctly. http://www.racesimcentral.net/

What are the opinions of these two wheels? I saw a lot of comparison to
other wheels, but not much against each other.

Thanks,

Kent

Ask and you shall receive (MOMO comparison) :0)

I own the MOMO Force (Leather wrapped/paddles only) and I've seen the MOMO
Racing in stores and played around with it a bit (feels much cheaper which
it should).  I also own the old red LWFF which is a great wheel (still works
fine) but not the same as a MOMO which has more precise control and just
seems "tighter".

The MOMO Force has a better feel, higher build quality and seems more robust
than the MOMO Racing.   It should since it originally retailed for $199 US
(street price $140-180), while the Racing is $99 (street of $69 on sale).
I've heard good things about the MOMO Racing as a value alternative.  If
price is not the issue, the Force is a better made wheel and performs
wonderfully for me.

I'd rank the Logitech wheels as follows:

1) MOMO Force
2) LWFF
3) MOMO Racing

Now if I can only get some Speed7 pedals I'd be set.

I just bought a MOMO Racing after my MSFF (gameport version) died.  I am
VERY happy with it; no complaints what so ever.  The wheel feels solid,
comfortable grip, well placed paddles buttons etc,  easy to mount a breeze
to install.  I like the feel of the brake pedal (firmer and more like a real
pedal feel than my old MS).

I bought the MOMO Racing, and put the extra cash towards a Force RS Shifter.
I hacked up my old MS pedals and rewired them with the RS Shifter to my
gameport.  Now I have a clutch, and an H-pattern shifter, a sequential
shifter and paddles.

Thanks Joe,

Google gave me a broken link to that article for some reason.

The Ferrari 360's use the F1 style paddle shifters...but unfortunately the
F12002 engine doesn't let us use one form of shifter for one car and another
for all the rest :(

P.S., I am incredibly picky about wheels, and love my MOMO Racing.  I would
buy 2 of them instead of one old MOMO.  The quality of the FFB and feel is
almost identical.  I can live without the real leather and refuse to buy a
wheel without at least a sequential gearshift.  The MOMO racing also looks
better sans that horrid red plastic.  The pedals on the old MOMO suck.
Lastly, the MOMO Racing shifter can be mounted on either side of the wheel,
so if you are a right-hand driver, you can still be comfortable.

It's there. You just have to copy and paste the second line of the url to
the browsers address bar.

That is correct!
Do you use a squash ball under your brake pedal?
The Racing Force pedals seems to be better than the MS pedals (and old momo
pedals).  I can't tell if the MS with squash ball is just as good, but it's
definitely better than without one!

Yes, I understand that on the post, what I meant was when I did a google
search (prior to posting my question) the link for that article didn't
work. I thought maybe the article had maybe been taken down or something.

I don't use a squash ball, but I have heard about it being used with
some pedals. I was going to do a search about this, but since you
brought it up, how is this done?

Thanks,

Kent

For the MS pedals you cut the ball in two, and put one half under the brake
pedal just where the tiny *** "pedal stop" is located. Press quite hard
when you calibrate the brake in your sim. You will then lock the brakes only
when you really step *** the brake, and it's easy to brake hard without
locking up. It's a must for GPL.
I don't think the speed (hardness) of the ball is very important.
For the momo pedals I think they put the whole ball inside the pedals base
and remove the spring.

I just recently purchased the MOMO Force, and combined with my Speed 7
pedals, it is really a sweet setup.  Prior to the MOMO I had been using an
ECCI, and I'm feeling just as stable with the MOMO, with the added fun
factor of force feedback.

If you're located in the states, I bought my MOMO Force from a retailer
listed on Price Watch for $102.00 delivered.  CompUSA has the MOMO Racing
for $69.99, after rebate that expires on 2/1/03.

I have the Thrustmaster Force Feedback Racing Wheel with the silver-colored
steering-wheel and a Ferrari-Horse on it. Do some people use squash-balls
for that system, too?

Thanks

(snip)

Just curious but where did you find the rebate for the Momo wheel? I just
checked CompUSA's web page under rebates but couldn't find it. Clicking on
the price for the item usually shows the pricing info including rebates but
it simply bounces me back to the $99.99 price page. Under their rebate page
for manufacturer's there is no listing for Logitech. It almost looks as if
this is an actual "sale" price with no MIR. Logitech doesn't show a current
rebate for this wheel at their website either.

Already tried that several times this week. It does NOT link to any rebate,
only to the in-store ad page. Clicking on the Momo wheel on the ad page
takes you to the Momo wheel page. Clicking on the price on the Momo wheel
page simply dumps me back to the Momo wheel page with no hint of a rebate.
Hence my original question!

Same results when I go directly to that product's page on the CompUSA
website. That's why I'm wondering if it's an actual sale without having to
mess with a MIR.

If you took the time to read the top of the ad you'd see it says "Print this
ad and bring it to your local store for these great specials."

Your welcome.
