GP2 severe slowdown in W95

by Eric Fesl » Tue, 27 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I am getting a really strange phenomenon running under W95.  Every few
laps my frame rate drops to maybe 2fps for 3-4 seconds.  It doesn't
happen under DOS and it didn't use to happen under W95.  I have
recently purchased a PPro 200 and Matrox Millenium.  I am running bios
settings that are equivalent to FastVid.  I am still trying to debug
this problem but I remember reading a post from somone who had the
same problem.  Any advice? Anyone seen this?

Thanks,
Eric Fesler

I am running GP2 in dos and in WIN95 with a Matrox 2Mb Millenium, but
I don't notice any slowdown.
I do have problems saving hotlaps when in WIN95; GP2 crashes when I
try saving a hotlap.

Try setting your framerate at 11 or 12 fps... And have a look at the
game then... Looks much faster than when using the ultimate (+20 fps)
settings....

Bye,
Erik.

IT WAS ME !!! NOBODY SEEMED TO BELIEVE ME AT THE TIME !!!

I run the game under DOS 6.2 and have that exact same problem. The
fenomenon also includes the car "floating" slowly to the left. When any
key is pressed, the game returns to normal.

This has resulted in the situation, where I play with one hand on CTRL
button in order not to drive to walls when the fenomenon happens.

I think it is time to see in which kind of configuration this happens.
Here is what I've got :

        Intel P100,16Mb, Triton Chipset
        Trident 9440 TVGA , 1Mb
        Gravis Ultrasound MAX
        Matshushita (Panasonic Comp.)CD-ROM 2X
        Dos 6.2, WIN95 (Boot in DOS 6.2)
        Wingman Ex.

PLEASE!!! Anyone with similar experiences, write immediatly to R.A.S.!!

I'm my last week at my summer job, so please notice the reply address!!
(Or use R.A.S., so we can see how common this problem is)

I'm not really sure I understand the problem your having. Is the car
drifting in some way that causes you to run into walls etc?
It might be a long shot but if your car is drifting then I'd point the
finger at your GUS. I also have a GUS and some games are unplayable if
I use it. It cause's drifting in games such as EF2000, TIE Fighter,
GP2 and lots of others that I have. With games like these I'm forced
to use my Vibra16 and then everything is fine. As an experiment, try
running GP2 for a little while without sound. If it works normaly then
you know it's the GUS.
Lastly, I know of others who have the drift problem that I have, but
also know of others that dont. So it may be a GUS/motherboard thing.

Why don't you try to play the game under DOS? DOS games should be played
under DOS and not in some buggy win-***ing-95. As I remember manual says
something about problems in w95. So use DOS and have fun!

I get the same both under Win95 and in DOS mode.  Four times in succession on every lap the PC
crawls for about two seconds then speeds up again.  I've tried reloading the game from CD and
still get the problem.  Even stranger this has only started occuring over the last week or so.
For the first month or so since purchase it worked fine.....

Sounds like your screen saver is starting up.  Turn it off. This happens if
I run
GP1 under win95, so I set the time before the screen saver starts up to 60
min, which gives me enough time to pley before it starts up.
