GP2 severe slowdown is gone!

by Harri Vaini » Fri, 06 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Lately in this newsgroup there has been several complaints about a
severe slowdown to ab. 2 fps in GP2 for 2 sec:s. I had this problem, and
systematically started to trace it. I haven't figured out what was the
original reason, but the problem is gone!! Here is what I did:

1) Re-installed Windows95, and left out the driver for Gravis
Ultrasound. This driver has been causing an announcement "Static device
resource problem" in startup sequence in my PC.

2) Changed the IRQ:s from 5,5 to 7,7. Check first, that these IRQ:s are
OK with Ultrasnd setup.

3) Changed Ultrasnd address frome 220 --> 230.

4) Run Ultrasnd setup with new values skipping the Windows installation.

5) Run GP2 setup for sound card.

6) Last, but not least, I downloaded a REPLAY, not a hot lap, of a
crash. This seemed to bring back the grass texture automatically, and
suddenly everything was OK.

I have bo idea why, but these things ( or more likely one of them) fixed
my problems. The slowdown is gone, and I think the game runs even faster
than before (and my times are improving too... 1.22.2xx Monza with
joystick:-))

You really should not try GP2 from within Windows(3.1/95), or most other
DOS games for that matter, it's always faster booting directly into DOS
instead of having any possible overhead from Windows.

Really spooky.  I restarted in DOS mode everytime after reading comments on this newsgroup but
still had the problem for while. Over the last week or so its gone..... (hopefully for good). I
made no other config changes.

I play GP2 on both a notebook and a desktop PC, and the only slowdown
I experienced was when I tried to enable "trickle power consumption"
which kills the frame rate.  Other than that, I'd like to hear about
what other people are seeing out there...

Not spooky at all... just takes a while for the computer to learn the track.
