General question on input devices. Assist please

by glen » Tue, 30 Jan 2001 06:42:06

I am a race sim nut, so i have my whell and pedals hooked up
constantly. But every now and again I just feel like having a fly, or
shooting the shit out of someone, both of which require a joystick.

I thought if I bought a USB joystick I could plug and play for those
games that reuire a joystick, whilst still having my wheel conected to
the games port.

It doesnt seem to work that way. Do I still have to disable the
steering wheel in the control panel / joystick panel even though my
joytck is USB?

its just a pain having to frig around if i just want to fly around for
a while.

would be interested if others have achieved this result.

thanks

I have a USB wheel and pedals for racing and a gameport joystick and rudder
pedals for flying . Both sets stay hooked up all the time but I still
shuffle the desired controller into the first slot of the Win 98 joystick
applet. To make that operation easier I put a shortcut to the applet on my
taskbar next to the start button. Handy to get at and no particular pain to
use, IMO.

I have a M$ Sidewinder FF and a Guillemot FF Wheel both on USB.. and had a
Precision Pro on gameport before.. never had a problem having both wheel +
joystick plugged in at the same time. Actually, I only ever encountered a
problem with European Air War, which reads Controller ID 1 (Second device)
if you have more than one, and had to unplug my wheel, since my M$ joysticks
would only work on ID 0 for some reason.

I have a LWFF wheel and a Logitech Extreme Digital 3D joystick, both
connected to a USB hub. I just choose which I want to use in the Logi
Profiler and go to the game/sim with no problem. Occasionally I am forced to
recalibrate in GPL after using the joystick, but that only happens on rare
occasions.
