Just upgraded for N4 (V5 to GeForce2 Ultra) - not to impressed so far!

by Juic » Sun, 18 Feb 2001 16:06:31

I just switched from a voodoo5 to a Geforce2 Ultra.  Things are quite shaky
now.  I'm using the 6.50 drivers.  Have allot of glitchy text when I'm in
windows reading the newsgroups!  Strange happenings when in Nascar4, sudden
freezes while I'm in the game, etc. etc. I  didn't get that at all with the
V5!  I'm running a P3-550e o'clocked to 825. That equals a 150fsb.  Does the
Geforce not like an overclocked system?   The V5 handled it well!
I'm also going to be upgrading the processor to a 1Ghz p3 on Monday.  I
wonder if this will improve things.

The main reason for the upgrade is because I love nascar4, and wasn't
getting very good framerates in the game with the V5, so I thought I'd
upgrade the processor and Video card.  I'm also running 128mb of 133mhz cas2
ram, and getting another 128mb to increase that also.

In Nascar4, at the opening lap in traffic, with a 30 car field, I used to
average about 12-15 fps.  I did some reading in the newsgroups, and others
were reporting no less than 45-50 fps in that warm up lap.  So, I figured
after the cars would stretch out some, the framerate would increase
obviously.  When I got the card in, the first thing I noticed was a
degradation in picture quality vs. the fsaa of the V5.  But, I kind of
expected that in exchange for the supposedly awesome framerate of the ultra
card.  When I set up the race, and started the half lap before green, I
averaged about 18-20 fps!!!!  What the hell!!  Did more reading, and turned
of the vsync in opengl, and tweaked it like some other readers on this group
mentioned, and I'm still getting really low framerates!!  Although the
framerates were very acceptable when cars were not bunched up together a
little later in the race, and at certain points on the track.

I'll keep working on it, in conjunction with more ram, and a faster
processor, but if this keeps up, I'll go back to my V5 that had the most
incredible picture quality I've seen.

Any particular drivers you guys recommend, or other tweaks I'm not aware of?

thanks in advance

Sounds to me like your new Geforce2 is overheating due to the
overclcocking.

why do you say that, I put the bus speed at the normal 100mhz just to see if
that were the case, but I still get the glitching in the text!  Also, when
I'm in the game, (nascar4), I get these random freezes, for a split second,
no real big deal, but I didn't get that with the voodoo5!

I get over 100fps with my Ultra at 1600x1200 in low traffic and rarely
drops below 50 in heavy traffic (cept I noticed 30's at Sears Point
last nigh)t. Your problem may depend on how the v5 was uninstalled and
the Ultra installed - could be little tids of v5 drivers still laying
around. clean out your registry of all v5 drivers and delete all v5
files from your harddrive. I'm using the new 752 drivers now
but if I remember right the 650 drivers were a bit slower than most
others. I think even 631 drivers were much better than the 650s

You should be getting much higher fps with what you got

It may sound drastic (it does to some people), but do a format of your C: drive
and reinstall Windows and all the latest drivers and whatever version of DX you
like (DX 7a is good enough, but I haven't had any trouble at all with DX 8).
Whenever you do a major hardware upgrade, even memory, *always* do a full
reinstall of your OS and drivers. You'll *never* acheive maximum performance
otherwise.

Also, I don't think N4 cares that much about your video card. If you don't have
enough texture memory (like me) then you may see some blurriness, but the
framerate isn't going to be huge. Mainly you just want some variety of modern
32MB or better GF2 or Voodoo. I think what N4 *really* wants is memory (I have
256MB and N4 loves it) and a fast processor (it doesn't love my overclocked
CeleMine 566->708). 256MB and a 1GHz or better processor should do wonders.

Because those are the symptoms of overheating. But, if you set it at
100mhz FSB then maybe you have a bad card or there is a voltage
problem, or???

Even memory? Are you nuts? :-) There is no need to do a format just
because you add more ram.

Also, as someone else mentioned in another thread, did you use the
N4 D3D driver with hardware T&L?

I switched from D3D to OpenGL on my Geforce 256 DDR card and got a 10fps
boost.
I get 36-86fps with 1024x768 and everything maxed. Everything.

I am using the 6.67 drivers.

Is there a specific reason why you don't use the (official) 6.50
drivers Ed? Or the 10.50 drivers for that matter, they were just
released.
