Anyone Simming with an o'clocked Radeon 9500?

by bertr » Mon, 27 Jan 2003 04:25:45

Over on the ATI newsgroup, I've read that it's possible to overclock a
Radeon 9500, so that it performs like a 9700.  The procedure seems
fairly easy too.  (Apparently, it's done in software....)

I'm curious whether any Racing simmers have tried this, how successful
you were, and what kind of performance boost it provides in sims like
NR2002, NR2003 demo, and GTR2002.

Has anyone tried this?  If so, please include prior and present system
specs so that I can assess the potential benefit on my system.

Thanks!

Remember the success rate is 40-50% or so.  If you can live with the stock
unit's performance anyway, the potential free upgrade is a nice bonus.
Another option is to buy the 9700 128mb non-pro for $60 more and replace the
bios with the pro bios, still a good savings over the pro.

Thanks, Roger.  I've read that the success rate is a bit better than that
though  - more like 65-70%.  I'd be curious to hear how the card performs in
racing sims (specifically GPL, GTR2002 and the Nascar sims) even in it's "stock"
form.  Given the same CPU (in my case an Athlon 1700XP), what kind of
performance increase can be expected over a Radeon 8500LE?

I seem to recall reading that the 9700 (and I assume this would also apply to
the 9500) originally had some problems running GPL.  If so, has that been
resolved?

the 9500 is on par with a 4600, and even a bit faster

I don't think they had problems running gpl, but rather, it could not use
FSAA with GPL since the original release only support 32bit fsaa.  I
believe that oversight/design choice, was rectified with the release of the
3.0 Catalyst drivers.  Am I correct Ati'ers...can the 9500/9700's run 16
bit fsaa now?

There is some menu corruption (9700pro, Cat3.0A, D3D, XP), but nothing
that affects racing.  The FSAA looks nice too.

I had menu corruption ever since a video on MB was installed Now have
installed 9500 Pro. Same menu corruption, but runs GPL and GTR
magnificently. P4 2.2 G. Triangle rate is 49.7 Mtri/sec.

OOOPS! Spoke too soon! Tried running a GT car, Lambo, and right away:
broad bars across track blocking view Went back to slower class, no
help, same thing, if I get that far. Now getting shimmering menus and
total malfunction! Did I fry my 9500 Pro?? Still works fine in GPL.
Never overclocked. Processor is 2.2G P4. No known heat issues.

Some ATI users have said this is fixable.  Make sure you have completely
cleaned out your Nvidia drivers.  Find any files beginning with NV*.* and
use detonator destroyer if you can.  Also try one of the regedit or
regclean programs to further clean up your system.  Once the old drivers
are cleaned out, this problem "supposedly" goes away.

(btw...see what happens when you don't choose Vipers?)

Something else: I went back to check out GPL, and there are tiny,
shimmering  colored dots all over the sky on all tracks, and on the
black base bar as well. Is that the same problem? I don't think I ever
had any Nvidia stuff on this machine, but I'll search.

I used to get that with my 3dfx cards when I overclocked them.  Once I
lowered the overclocking somewhat, it would not appear.

9500 Pro continued to deteriorate after couple more hours use. Colored
ghost shadows over all screens and tiny colored dots increased. We had
retained the 8 drivers and not installed the 9 drivers. Is that a
mistake? Pulled case to see if card fan running OK, it was. Removed
card and powered old motherboard video. All anomalies went away, but
now no accleration. Ideas, anyone? SPS

Sam

That doesn't sound good.  I hope you haven't overcooked the video chip.
try updating your Catalyst drivers to version 3.0 and I don't think it
matters if you have dx8 or dx9 installed.
