Thanks for this feedback, guys!
I think I've solved the pedal problem. Steve Smith suggested a game
port to USB adapter from Radio Shack. I found one for $15. It seems to
work ok. I just plugged the CH Pedals into the adapter, and plugged the
adapter's USB cable into a USB port on the computer.
I also plugged an old joystick into the Y cable on the CH pedals, so
Windows would not reject it for not having axes 1 and 2.
The adapter has a small switch on it to choose the type of controller
you've got plugged into it. I found that position 2 (Joystick A) seemed
to work. Windows Game Controllers recognizes it, and allows me to
calibrate it. GPL also recognizes it and lets me choose the Logitech
wheel for steering and the pedals for throttle and brake, just as I used
to with the PDPI.
BTW, I didn't totally commit to using XP on this machine yet. I bought
a removable hard drive cage and two trays so I can easily switch between
hard drives. I just power down the computer, slide out the tray/hard
drive, slide in the other tray/drive and reboot.
My good old Win98 install, complete with GPL, is on one hard drive. A
different hard drive (left over from my IDE driver/DMA disaster a few
weeks ago) has the XP install.
So if I need to run GPL on this machine before I get it working well on
XP, I'll just slap the old Win98 hard drive in there and hopefully I'm
good to go! I did this so I could get familiar with XP while still
having access to a good Win98 install for running GPL, in case I had
problems with GPL on XP.
Considering the problems I've encountered so far, I'm glad I did it this
way! It's a very cheap way of effectively having two different
computers, one with Win98 and the other with WinXP. Plus I don't have
to worry about possible problems with dual booting.
The only change I've made to the computer other than installing the cage
was to set the BIOS parameter for Plug and Play OS to No, so the two
different versions of Windows won't try to change around things like
IRQ's.
