Windows XP and PDPI L4?

Windows XP and PDPI L4?

by Alison Hin » Sun, 03 Nov 2002 17:08:29

Ok, I bit the bullet and bought a copy of XP Pro.  I figure I've got to
move into the new century sometime!

I also bought a swappable hard drive cage so I can keep my old Win98
installation until I decide to stick with XP.

I installed XP and slapped the GPL DirectX rasterizer in place, and GPL
fired right up.  Then I discovered that XP hadn't recognized my PDPI L4!
My CH Pro Pedals, which are connected to the L4, don't show up in GPL.
Windows Game Controllers doesn't see the CH Pedals either.

Augh!!  I'm *not* going to use those damn Logitech pedals!

Has anyone tried installing the L4 software on XP?  Am I fighting a
losing battle, and should I just go ahead and buy a set of CH Pro USB
Pedals for that machine?

Also, does the Logitech Wingman software work on XP?  XP's Wingman
driver seems to be totally featureless (can't choose split axes; no
adjustment of force or damping), and it feels like I'm not getting full
force from my LogiFF wheel.

Windows XP and PDPI L4?

by Schuhhaus Wollenschei » Sun, 03 Nov 2002 22:24:11

Hi Alison,

i discovered the same problem 1 year ago.I built my machine by myself.I went
for the Abit KT7A board, cause that was the only one left with an ISA slot on
it for the PDPI.

But WinXP will not recognize the PDPI ... no way.The only solution is to
install a Win98 copy with just the necessary for GPL and WinXP for anything
else.

In the end i do still have Win98 on my machine and WinXP uninstalled!

I'm using the 4.20 drivers ( http://www.wingmanteam.com ) and using
split axis for Rally Trophy and Live For Speed. Also have some custom
force settings for each game set with the Wingman Profiler.

Windows XP and PDPI L4?

Bit the Bullet and set up a *** partition with win98.  I did that for GPL
and I've never had a problem.  I don't do anything to that partition without
backing it up first.  I love league night too much to risk problems.  I'm
seriously considering to just dedicate a system for GPL to avoid problems

Windows XP and PDPI L4?

Thanks for this feedback, guys!

I think I've solved the pedal problem.  Steve Smith suggested a game
port to USB adapter from Radio Shack.  I found one for $15.  It seems to
work ok.  I just plugged the CH Pedals into the adapter, and plugged the
adapter's USB cable into a USB port on the computer.

I also plugged an old joystick into the Y cable on the CH pedals, so
Windows would not reject it for not having axes 1 and 2.

The adapter has a small switch on it to choose the type of controller
you've got plugged into it.  I found that position 2 (Joystick A) seemed
to work.  Windows Game Controllers recognizes it, and allows me to
calibrate it.  GPL also recognizes it and lets me choose the Logitech
wheel for steering and the pedals for throttle and brake, just as I used
to with the PDPI.

BTW, I didn't totally commit to using XP on this machine yet.  I bought
a removable hard drive cage and two trays so I can easily switch between
hard drives.  I just power down the computer, slide out the tray/hard
drive, slide in the other tray/drive and reboot.

My good old Win98 install, complete with GPL, is on one hard drive.  A
different hard drive (left over from my IDE driver/DMA disaster a few
weeks ago) has the XP install.

So if I need to run GPL on this machine before I get it working well on
XP, I'll just slap the old Win98 hard drive in there and hopefully I'm
good to go!  I did this so I could get familiar with XP while still
having access to a good Win98 install for running GPL, in case I had
problems with GPL on XP.

Considering the problems I've encountered so far, I'm glad I did it this
way!  It's a very cheap way of effectively having two different
computers, one with Win98 and the other with WinXP.  Plus I don't have
to worry about possible problems with dual booting.

The only change I've made to the computer other than installing the cage
was to set the BIOS parameter for Plug and Play OS to No, so the two
different versions of Windows won't try to change around things like
IRQ's.

Hi Alison!

Oh, you mean a new century of idiotic licensing terms, virus
compatibility and MS poking around on your hard drive once
you've clicked "I agree"? Maybe you can still return the copy
for a refund ;-)

You'd be better off with a current Linux distro for your
production stuff, keep win98 for the games.

If you have some room to spare or a separate HD, you can dual
boot windows and Linux.

a word on your spam blocker: these addresses look fake alright,
but the originial from: address of your post does contain

believe).

May I suggest you get a free yahoo account (or gmx or whatever)
to use for reply to headers? Thus, someone still has a valid
"means" of getting in touch with you (I check my yahoo spambox
about once a week which is more than enough).

As other posters have pointed out, XP does not support ISA
devices too well.

Bye for now & good luck,

Uwe
