AMD K6-2 300: Anyone using it?

by VABergfe » Sat, 08 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I'm about to buy a new system in the next month or so.  I was figuring a
P2-300, but with a BX MB and PC100 memory so I could drop a 400-450 in in a
couple of years.  Lately Fry's has been running this add for a K6-2 300
claiming 3D Winbench scores equal to a P2-400.  Is anyone here using this chip?
What do you think?  It seems like more for less, but I guess the tradeoff is
compatability and future upgradeability.  I am particularly interested in
comments on F1RS and TOCA.  TIA

I sell the AMD K6-2 300 and use it with the Hyper Stimulator through my
website, www.directcomputers.com .   It works very well with no complaints.
I am curious to see how Direct X6 affects the performance.   AMD really make
a good product.  But what works better, since you already have the BX
motherboard, is to (depending on your brand of motherboard) drop the Intel
Celeron 300 in it and run it at the 100mhz bus to achieve 450mhz.  The
Celeron chip is not good at doing Excel and other business applications
because of no cache but overclocked to 450 runs great for games which up
until now don't really use the cache.  Mine run with no problems so far!  Of
course this totally voids the warranty but it is a cheap way to get great
*** performance.

    I use an AMD K6-2 300 and I also have an Obsidian X-24 (Voodoo2 SLI 24mb single
PCI slot). F1RS runs in all situations with no slowdown...I mean you can have 20
cars in front of you in a turn and with this combo and the frame rate remains
perfect. For the price you can't beat it.

I'm thining of buying one of these chips, but I have a question :
I have a TX-Pro m/b that takes AMD cpu's up to 300mhz. Will it take K6-2? The
manuel says nothing about K6-2. Any Ideas?

Thanks

The point of the AMD K6-2 is the 100mhz bus though it will work below this.
Check if your motherboard supports 100mhz bus and core cpu voltage of
2.2volts.

I have hands on experience with K2-300.  You will find it hard to find the
right motherboard.  You want one with a 100mhz bus, but Intel TX will NOT
run it properly.  Go to Amd's homepage and it will list motherboards that it
recommends.  For the K2-300, you will have to have the Apollo chipset or
another one called Via I think.  After you find which motherboard you want,
go to www.pricewatch.com and look for the motherboard.  You will find that
it will be about 90-100 bucks for the new board.  Again, the Intel chipset
will NOT run the K2-300 properly.

AMD K6-2 300: Anyone using it?

Hallo,

I've upgraded my old P133-System with an AMD K2-300, a FIC 503+
Motherboard and 64 MB SDRAM (100PC).

F1RS is fantastic, GP2 also. All graphics on, everthing functions without
problems. In F1RS the computer-cars react without delay and You can drive
Your car without interrupts.

Greetings,

Axel

mobo/cpu, the machines are indentical with All In Wonder pro 4mb cards, and
voodoo1 cards. Top flight stuff. The celeron 266 clocked to 450 is the very
best cpu available for ***, for the price. A real P2-400/450 MIGHT be
better, but I doubt it. Just FYI.

Well I can't say for GP2 but I have played F1RS and it was THE game this
processor was made for! It was amazing when you consider I had a 32 EDO
Cyrix P150+ before (with a Rightous 3D) but now it is amazing. I love it and
it's another eason for me to get back into it :-)

Just what I thought. Perhaps he is refering to the quality of the game not
slowing up? If so it does from time to time but this is to be expected from
a game of this quality (well that's what I think).

....

What I meant was... whether you drive by keyboard, joystick or wheel, each of
these devices uses interrupts to call the processor....Without interrupts, no
gameplay!   ;-)
