Spirit of Heat

by Andre Warring » Sat, 09 Mar 2002 08:20:50

I never tried Spirit of Heat before because I lost my Heat cd.
And to be honest I didn't expect it to be that good, since Heat itself
never gave me much fun.

Weeeell... DAMN IT'S AWESOME! I'm totally surprised by this.
Contrary to most (all) other usermods, the installation was a breeze
(you click on 'install' and well, that's it).

I started SoH, and saw a professional menu including funky '30s music.
I set realism to realistic (don't forget this!) and did my first
practice run. The graphics of the cars are simply stunning, look at
the screenshots at the links below.

Driving these cars is something like driving a Lotus 49 on the Ring
with a GH2 setup, but then ten times worse.. just as I like it :)

Hit the armco when I e***d the pits. The wheel started wiggling. I
rammed my car totally at the second corner. The windshield broke off
and a wheel broke off. Attention to the graphics is superb and these
cars handle as I expect them to.

I just spent 2 hours on Watkins and damn, driving these cars is fun!
While surfing some Heat mods sites I noticed a lot of new tracks have
been built (including Assen :) a lot of new cars and even a Speedboat
mod too :)

A big thanks to Bodin (I allways thought you went bananas after you
praised Ford Racing but you were right about SoH after all :) and to
all involved.

Right, enough rambling, install the mod now and have fun :)

Hehe!  THANKS Andre!  I still think there's at least a mediocre
physics engine (something better than NFS or Test Drive, at least)
lurking in Ford Racing.  Alas, though, it's far form salvageable.

;-)

As for SoH, we put a LOT of heart and soul into the SoH mod -- and it
was all aimed at GPL fans, so it's GREAT to hear that you like it so
much!  Big Ben did a KILLER job with the graphics, sounds, etc., and a
LOT of testing went into the physics, so we're all glad t hear when
someone else is as taken with it as we are.

:-D

BTW, wait until you see the Porsche Vintage Heat mod . . . the physics
are every bit as good AND accurate as the SoH physics (maybe even
better).  <G>

TTYL!

I want to try it, but damn it's a big download on my piddly 56k modem. But
if you say it is worth it then I will try doing an overnight download
tonight.

Ouch.. that's indeed a big download for you, but yes it's worth it!
Don't forget to download all the addon tracks, the Ferrari F40 mod,
the Truck Mod, the Sportscar Mod, the Cart Mod..
I hope you're modem won't melt while downloading all these mods :)

FWIW, I did a test download using my 56K modem shortly after we put it
up, and it wasn't so bad -- I did the download while watching "The
Fast And the Furious" (GREAT movie, IMO, gonna be a cult classic!),
and it only took a little over an hour, IIRC.  Well worth the effort,
to be sure!

I'm done downloading the first five files. Thought I could do it overnight
in one download but I see it is split into smaller files. And going by the
readme it won't be very good using the stock tracks because of an AI issue
so I will have to download all the tracks too. Oh well, should be finished
by this time next week.

Maybe I should go back to DSL. Some game patches are getting huge these days
too.
I've got the first five SoH files so far.

FWIW, we should have an AI fix in the works in the near future -- this
will allow us to distribute decent AI for whatever tracks we want to
support, in a smallish download (> 1MB).  There are some behind the
scenes stuff still left to do, but we should be able to make this
happen, which will only improve the game overall.

Great, because I'm not interested in Heat as a Nascar sim anymore since
N2002 is better and making it a historic sim is a great idea. Thx. BTW, I
see on your page that SoH is dedicated in memory of Neil Bainbridge. What
happened to him, if you don't mind me asking?

But is the CART mod still around?   I thought it was taken off to make
a real game out of it.   If not, where is it?   And the others?

The IRL mod had to be discontinued at the express request of the Indy
Racing League -- check here for details:

http://irlheat.bhmotorsports.com/

I can provide you with test files if you'd like to sample the IRL
physics -- just drop me an e-mail.
