VROC - A victim of it's own succes?

Whilst I have owned and loved GPL for over a year now, I only recently tried
racing online.  It is great fun to race against real people who, just like
me, make the occasional error.  However, I find it very frustrating to be
punted at the very first corner and even worse to find that I can't avoid
an accident caused by some one who has qualified well in front of me and
should know better.  Why is there a desperate need to pass every car before
T1?

I may get flamed for saying this but here goes anyway.  I think that some
guys out there can put in a one-off  quick qualifying lap (e.g. 1:28:xx at
Monza) but are completely unable to run consistently for any more than a
single lap.

There is nothing worse than qualifying well after a 15min session only to
have it ruined 15 seconds into the race.  I wouldn't mind so much, but some
of us still have to pay for our call time.

I only believe that this problem is not going to go away as GPL via VROC
becomes even more popular with the advent of call free ISP's and cable
modems in Europe.

Perhaps someone can let me know how to join an online league where
presumably such dragster starts and over  exuberance is less prevalent.

Cheers

Next time someone ruins a race at the start, save the replay and have a look
what hapenned.  You may find it was no one's fault.   All you need is a lag
spike or a few lost packets, or even someone playing with a high ping and
that alone can cause a crash.
What irritates me is the people who disconnect just because they got
involved in a turn one shunt.  You can have just as much fun racing for 6th
or 10th as racing for the podium places.  In all my time on Vroc i've never
deliberately disconnected, not even once.  I always finish the race, even if
I'm last.

(applause) I'm with you in that I can't understand people that don't stick
around. Its an old saying that you race with the guy in front of you. Lots
of good racing is available down through the pack if theres anyone there.
Stick around and learn how to race the other guy and we'll all be better
racers for it.

Which is why they're racing in computer games and not real cars (hate to
point out the obvious).

I second that.

However, finishing a Pro race with a wheel missing is beyond my capabilities
;-)

I do so, too, and it's a good feeling when you pass those spinning cars
a couple of laps later... I may still finish last (because they disconnect)
but at least I kept my car on the track all the time!

Even though I appreciate your problem, and it's happened to me many
times, I'd much rather have lots more people playing, even if they aren't
all brilliant.

At the moment you generally only have 40 or so people on VROC, 20 of
which are all in a race at either the Glen or Monza. It would be nice to
have more races and at different tracks.

I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one that stayed online no
matter what. I actually placed 6 out of 7 last night because I was
able to race the whole race with less problems than the 7th place
finisher. I was very happy to find that last night I was the only
idiot that had a problem at turn 1 at Monza, but as there was only one
car behind me and I just stuffed a tire in the bushes prior to the
turn and no one else was affected. I then passed 3 cars by the second
lesmo. They all passed me back by lap 2, but I had fun none the less.
I would have to say it was one of my better races. I have even
finished races when I am the only one still there! if for no other
reason that I need the practice. I am only sort-of good at four tracks
any way so . . . Just look for a slow Ferrari with a gold helmet and
it will prolly be me. :-) Just call me the Turtle/Tortoise.

Well, i've to admit, I'm one of the people who do disconnect after an
accident...

Reasons:

a/

I hardly use Shift-R. When I allow myself to use Shift R, a crash just
means a slower laptime. When I don't, Shift R is end of race. The
latter will force me to drive clean. I've seen people race in a funny
way, don't brake, just crash, and use Shift R. Pinball racing...

b/

Most of the time a crash is caused by a bonehead, who can't race
clean. IF I do Shift R, and continue to race, I will "race" this same
person after a few turns again. When I've passed that person, 9 out of
10 this person will forget to brake, hitting me in the rear. Trust me,
that gets boring soon...

There is one big reason for all these problems:

you can't get killed or hurt in GPL.

Real life racing is dangerous, and makes you drive more carefully.

Sollution?

Make a USB device that will give you electro shocks if you hit another car.
The heavier you crask, the more it should hurt. Its the same as force
feedback, only more intense.

(Of course you can attach the device to any part of your body you want
to...)

Better yet, how about setting up a button on the wheel as a "stunner".
Anyone comes near you, you shock them!

I like it :-)

Stewart, visit my webpage (url below) and go to the UK GPL section, it
may be just what you are looking for?
