I have three servers available, at least one of which is usually running during
non-working hours.  When I've hosted 'non-traditional'(for the lack of a better
term) tracks, they sit idle.  Or, if it's set for longer than a novice
race(usually int long) I see comments in the chat logs:
20 laps?!?  Too long for me...
Then they disco.  So who are the people who want longer races, at different
tracks than Monza or Watkins?  It doesn't bother me too much if the servers are
idle, because I don't have to pay anything for them.  If I *did*, I might be a
tad upset...<g>

I at one point even gave up on qualifying.  I'm usually last or 2nd to last, so
why bother?<g>
Typically, what happens is this:  I'm 14th or 15th out of 15 cars.  7 or 8 cars
crash ahead of me in the first corner.  If I can make it through the carnage
unscathed, I'm in the top 10.  About half of the cars that crash disco.  The
rest catch me within a lap.  Remember I'm the slowest guy on the track...<g>
In another lap or so I pass another bunch of cars that had a rendezvous.  About
half of THEM utter expletives, then disco.  By the time the survivors catch me,
pass me, and disappear into the distance, the cars have thinned out enough that
they can go the rest of the race without incident.   I usually spend the rest
of the race tooling aroud the track by myself.  Unless it's a longer race, in
which case I get lapped, and have to dodge the hotshoes charging by.  Each time
I pass someone who's spun off, then I worry about them punting me in their hast
to get back to the front.  It's not always a good experience, and driving along
by myself DOES get boring...  I still haven't quit a race because I was last.
I quit one Sunday because I screwed up my fuel load, and didn't think it was
sporting to Shift-r to refuel(league race). <shrug>

I have the same feelings.  I don't quit, either.  I have many last places to
show for it...<g>

Hey, I never give up either, and with 3 wheels (provided, the right front is
missing), I did several laps running at 3:44ish in Spa, I even recall a nice
battle with Tim Wheatley long ago, we both were left with 3 wheels and had
one of the best battles with our sidecars....... try it out, Spa really roxx
like that, careful on entering masta tho, u start off going left there! :).
In Monaco I also finished a pro-race as a 3-wheeler......1:48's were
possible there for me.
How about a patch for GPL, u know what I mean! :)

1st, a quick thanks for the servers.

2nd, it's a mystery to me why Monza still draws the crowds, but it
certainly does. Mind you, I and others are probably drawn to a busy server
which means I race Monza far more online than I have ever have done off
(well, apart from when it was released in the demo months). WG is a great
racing track IMO, but Mosport and Zandvoort are probably my favourites and
neither are too popular...especially if Monza's available <g>. In fact
Mosport's probably less popular than the NRing!

Maybe a lot of people don't actually feel comfortable on many tracks?
There's a difference between being able to race offline and feeling
confident enough to face a packed grid online.

Can't you play around with the .ini files for the tracks so that those
novice or intermediate races - depending on how you want to do it - are
of a more suitable length.  Novice races seem so short that they are
more like sprints.  Even intermediate ones can feel that way sometimes.

Going back to discoing because of a crash.  I have now decided to do so
if I am the cause of the pile-up on the first lap or through my driving
cause someone to be not able to continue.   My thinking being that, if I
have to disco because my bad driving has wrecked someone else race, then
hopefully it will make me a more careful driver and hence be the cause
of fewer accidents.  If I drive around thinking that bad driving has no
consequences then I'm not going to improve myself in any way to avoid
accidents when dicing.

Apart from that I will race until I cannot continue, am just being plain
***(crashing every lap), or everyone else has left. <g>

Ok, so what would be a suitable length?  It doesn't bother me to race any
length race online.  I even tried a GP race.  When it got down to just two of
us, he gave me the victory, and quit.  But, we both knew who was faster...
