I am planning to buy a 3dfx card...mainly due to all the comments posted
here. Will i see any difference when playing Nascar2?...What about other
games not specifically designed for 3dfx?

What's the best 1 to due?...I'm leaning towards the Diamond monster. Is
there a better value card available?

Not yet but hopefully soon as the good folks at 3dfx & Papy are
supposedly working on a "patch" to port to 3dfx hopefully around or
soon after Christmas.

OpenGL & Direct 3d will be accelerated also and of course the native
"Glide" -3dfx.

Currently the best is probably the Pure3d by Canopus as it has an
extra 2megs of texture ram which some "Direct 3d" and probably most
future titles will take advantage of, not to mention the Pure3d also
has an onboard TV out feature. The Diamond Monster is also a fine
choice although without the above two features, the current price
drops may make it the best choice for some. Figure around $180 for the
Pure3d and probably $40 or so less for the D.Monster.

My system P166MMX, consists of both the Diamond Stealth II (Rendition
2100 chipset) and a Pure3d 3dfx by Canopus. The Stealth II isn't bad
although I'm a little concerned with Diamond's reputation and current
drought in producing updated drivers and resolving the "quirks" which
this card currently has. On the other hand, the Canopus Pure3d has
been a pure joy and Canopus has been quick to release TWO driver
updates thus far (over a two month period).

When the patch comes out.

The 3Dfx will have no effect on it if it does not support 3D acceleration.
Either 3Dfx (through Glide) or Direct3D or OpenGL.

You will need a special patch to run N2 on a 3Dfx card; until it's
released (soon), only a Rendition card will run N2 in all its 3D glory.

No problem - 3Dfx cards can run any title that supports Direct 3D (part
of DirectX), GLIDE (the 3Dfx-only API), or any of the OpenGL games such
as Quake, Q2, Half Life (if it ever ships), etc.

Basically, a 3Dfx will run everything, while other 3D cards mainly
support only Direct 3D (and so do OpenGL now too).  But only a 3Dfx card
will run a GLIDE title

If you can wait just a little while longer (couple months), Voodoo2 will
be here, and it will be well worth waiting for.  There's gonna be a ton
of manufacturers, from Diamond with the new Monster 2 to Creative Labs
even.

If you gotta have a Voodoo NOW (understandable <g>), either the Monster,
Righteous 3D (Orchid) or Canopus Pure 3D are all decent cards.  The
Canopus card has an xtra 2 MB of texture memory and a TV Out if that
would influence your decision at all.  Plus Canopus has proven itself to
be a top flight company from both hardware design and software support
(drivers) aspects.
