The death of keyboard racing ?

Is it just me, or has the notion of playing a racing game with the
keyboard become a thing of the past these days?  I just read an article
today that confirmed something I guess I already knew:  nascar 4 +
keyboard = waste of time : )  This certainly speaks wonders for the
realism of the game, but now it's just another game that I can only play
when I setup up my steering wheel.  Remember the good old days when you
could quickly stop the work your supposed to be doing on your computer,
and turn a few laps in your favorite racing game using just the
keyboard?  But now almost every racing game I own requires me to clear
my desk, hook up my steering wheel, put the pedals in place, take some
pills for the impending back pain, and then finally play.  I mean this
is fine when you're setting up for a few hours worth of racing, but it's
not so good when your seeking a quick distraction : )  So is it just me,
or does anyone else yearn for the good ol' days of keyboard racing?

Desperately trying to start my thesis,
Leo

It's not just you. I have a CBM64 emulator with a copy Revs for those
nostalgic moments.

Yes, it's a thing of the past.  Unless your name is Geoff Crammond.  Oh
yeah, he showed us with GP3 that he's really living in the past <G>

Come on, you are either exaggerating or you don't have a very good
setup. My pedals are always under my desk, my wheel has a quick clamp
(MS Sidewinder Precision) and it is Digital USB so no calibration
needed. Takes me all of 10 seconds to move the keyboard aside and
clamp the wheel to the desk. Then I'm good to go. If I want to play a
flight sim I just unplug the wheel from the USB extension and plug the
stick in, again no calibration needed and I'm ready to go. That takes
all of 10 seconds too. I've  never played a racing game with the
keyboard, but I have tried it out of curiosity and it gives me no
feeling of driving at all. If you want a quick diversion then play
Mineseweeper.

You're right ... I was exaggerating a little bit : )  However, it definitely
sounds like it takes me a little longer to setup my wheel than for you.  To
be honest, I've always found that needing to hook up my wheel was a bit of a
deterrent, especially if I don't plan to play for long.  I just loved how
quick and easy it used to be when I could use the keyboard.  But then again,
maybe I'm just tired of procrastinating with tetris : )

Leo If I may, I am disabled and do not use any pedals. I've always used
a steering wheel since GPL with no problems and I had a nice box made
so I can just toss it on my bed to race. {Yes my bed!} I am not the best
plus many online are still amazed' that I race with no pedals at all & only
paddles on my wheel.. I also use manual shifting, clutching & steering all
from my wheel. I did run TM's Nascar Sprint but now I use Quillemot's
aka Thrusmaster's Ferrari FF wheel.
Bottom line you do not have to clear anything to race with a wheel and
btw many of the GPLer hotshoes are using paddled gas/brake! Maybe
I started something...eh? <BG>
Cheers Thom_j.
P.S. Also I want *no* pitty from *anyone* when I race online! I am
just another online racer ready to kick butt.. No less, No more!! :o)

The death of keyboard racing ?

I'd say keyboard racing has been dead for years. The keyboard just
doesn't give the control. I remember with the Indy 500 sim I switched
from keyboard to joystick and the difference was dramatic.

As for wheels, I race at the desk of my home office. My wheel is
attached to a marble chess board (about 10 lbs) and I slide the keyboard
drawer out, sit the wheel on the desk and the C-claps of the wheel rest
on the edge of the keyboard.  This demands somewhat of a light touch
which has helped me in racing and my 3 year old Thrustmaster T2 is still
in fine shape with periodic replacement of pots. A convenient solution
for me. It literally takes me 10 seconds to setup for racing and when
not racing my wheel sits beside my desk out of the way.

I used to run IndyCar1 with a joystick for steering and keys for
gas/brake.  NASCAR1 required you to go to analog control for gas/brake
as well.  I use two tiny joysticks (CH Mach I) now -- left hand for
gas/brake on Y axis, right hand for steering on X axis.  Two seconds
to pull them from behind the PC to sit on my keyboard wristpad.

nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

And you won't get any from me. I used to use a TM GP1 and used analog
paddles for gas and brakes. The hands are quicker than the feet so you
may actually have the advantage. :-)

It is not that clear. An average person usually has to do a lot
of precise work with his hands, but not with his feet, so his hands
are quicker and more precise. However, the person used to move
the mouse with his feet while using hands to type on the keyboard or
the person used to play bass guitar with his feet while playing
solo with his hands may easily have pretty same level of control
over his feet as over his hands :>

Try GP3. There is a great competition (offline but time limited) coming up
at www.lfrs.com. Or www.sim-racing.net/hof3 for some hotlapping action.

Many times I think I do Jagg :o)
The only disadvantage I found is in GPL when I must turn, brake and
feather my gas (using my personal form ot trail'breaking} while down
shifting. Its a bit tough on the hands..lol
