Eric Busch/Papy: What's the deal with the spotter voice problem in NR99?

by Marc Collin » Wed, 09 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I am sure you have already read the posts regarding the inability to hear
the spotter's voice sound if the engine and other sounds are set at
reasonable levels...even when the spotter voice is kept to 50% or less.  Put
the slider above 50% and it becomes impossible to get a proper balance
without changing the Windows master sound level to a setting that is too
high for EVERYTHING else on a typical system--games (all other Papy titles
included) and regular apps. and CD music.  There is no reason we should need
to adjust the Windows sound level just for NR99.

Is this a problem specific to certain sound cards or to NR99 generally.  If
it is a general problem, when will a patch be released to return the sliders
to their N2 perfectly functioning format?  If it is a specific card problem,
could you list the cards it affects (that you know of).  We'll get on to
those manufacturers quickly to resolve it.

Thanks,

Marc.

Since I don't have this problem with my Ensoniq AudioPCI, I would
tend to think it is not a problem with NR99 generally. I would suspect
your soundcard, or even the way NR99 uses your soundcard. I would
think if it were a general problem with NR99 I would have the same
problem.

Well, the SB PCI 128 has terrible drivers at this point, so it wouldn't
surprise me if that were the case....BUT....you are using a card from the
same family (the 128 is just a souped up Ensoniq AudioPCI) and many people
here have reported the problem and I don't think they are all using the
128...??

I have the same "low volume" sound problem with N99 that many others have
reported, and my sound card is SB AWE 64.

AFAIK the NR1999 sound system (both for the DOS and Windows versions)
works identically to N2, that being with the spotter set at 50% all of
the other sounds are at their normal volume levels and when the
spotter is set above 50%, all of the other sounds are muted to some
degree.  As was the case with N2, at the default mixer settings all of
the sounds are relatively quiet but are properly balanced.  I guess
it's possible that their may be some soundcard/driver combos in which
this is not the case, but I have yet to experience it.

I do not experience any problems running N2 under Windows regarding the
sound.  I can easily get a good balance of sounds turning any individual
setting from off to blast-off levels and accomplishing a reasonable balance
(i.e., a decent throaty engine sound but still being able to hear the
spotter clearly) is not an issue or something I even thought about (sort of
like the controller calibration in all Papy sims--it just works seamlessly
out of the box without extra fiddling).  With NR99, lots of us are unable to
get a mix where the engine sounds are about the same level (real volume) as
we would set them in GPL, N2, F1RS, ICR2, CMR, VR, etc. and still be able to
hear the spotter at anything above a whisper.  The only way I can properly
hear the spotter is to set a balance not too far from the default settings
but also simultaneously bumping up the Windows master volume level to a
point where I am blasted out of the room by GPL, N2, F1RS, ICR2, CMR, VR and
even the little blinky Windows menu sounds.  You don't have this problem
vis-a-vis the Windows master volume level?  No one else is telling you about
it (because it has been posted here plenty of times)?

Thanks,

Marc
