Problems with N2 multiyplayer (modem) - I need help please!!!

I am having a problem that probably has a simple fix and has probably been
answered here before. My friend and I have been trying to play N2 via modem
for the past week with no success. Our computers will connect but 15
seconds later the message "connection failed" will appear, then our modems
will hang up. We both reinstalled the game in new directories so neither of
us have any modifications to the game such as new AI, cars, or fixes etc.
I'm using a Boca Modem (14.4) and he is using a Hayes (28.8). We have tried
playing at both 9600 and 14400 baud. We can play NASCAR 1 fine with no
problems at all, which is getting us all the more frustrated. I have tried
everything I can think of, granted I'm not a genius with the computer. I'm
sorry to resort to posting here but I have looked at all the
troubleshooting guides I could find and couldn't find an answer that
related to our problem.

Thanks...John Huntington
