GPL, Voodoo 2 vs Open GL

Hello

Is there ANY reason to prefer runniong the game in Open Gl rather than with
my good old Voodoo 12 ?

I tried to install the Open Gl patch and I lost 10 Fps.....it sucks

Is there a way to make the same Fps with an Open GL and with a voodoo 2 ?

I have athlon 700, 128Megs and a TNT 2 with 32 Megs on it...

Thx for the input

The OpenGL patch is a beta, and only intended to make GPL work with
non-rendtion/3dfx cards, it's not supposed to be used for 3dfx cards at all.
Any game using Glide (which is what GPL runs under on a Voodoo) will be
faster than the equivalent OpenGL/D3D version.
Also I think you'll find that when you switch to OpenGL, GPL is using your
TNT2 and not your voodoo 2.

Yep, the idea with Open GL was to get rid of my voodoo 2, but I really don't
see the point, so here's my advice to EVERYBODY who wants to play GPL.

Buy a CHEAP, USED voodoo 2 board for GPL, and save money on the video
card....

I have a TNT2 from guillemot (cougar video edition) and I think it runs
faster than with a geforce/Open GL combo....

Thanks for the info anyway.

Not if you have both cards, no.

Quite.  This can't just be down to the lower-performance of OpenGL... the
OpenGL rasterizer for GPL must be ever-so-slightly badly written.

You have to fiddle core.ini  There have been plenty of posts here on this
subject.  Reduce to mirror detail, draw them less often.  Switch off more
detail in the game.  Does that help?

Yikes... the spec I am aiming for.  :-(

I also have a TNT2 (non-ultra) and a 3dfx V1000 (Voodoo2). They are in
a PIII-500MHz.

TNT2: At 1024*768 in OpenGL with enough on to make it enjoyable, I get
about 28 to 36 at any given point with all cars, online, etc. With
800*600, it is really about the same, maybe a little less in the 20s,
but no real difference.

Voodoo2: At 960*720 (something like that) I get a constant 35-36, with
the same stuff on, number of cars. I tried to switch to 1024*768, and
turn off all but cars in the mirrors, and I still did not like the FPS
or the image.

The image quality of the TNT2 is better, but the Voodoo2 gives a
better feel for speed. I have been using the Voodoo2 only for the last
month. I have noticed a few more lockups with the Voodoo2, than with
the TNT2, but that may be a heat thing. Also for some reason the
voodoo2, Vroc, and ZoneAlarm don't like each other. So I have to turn
off ZoneAlarm to race on Vroc. Hope to solve this with either a Linux
firewall, or a Linksys Router.

I hope that I will be able to get an 850MHz PIII one of these days to
assist in getting to 1024*768 with the voodoo2, or maybe higher with a
voodoo5! :-)
