OT: New WinXP Pro Installation - Questions

by bertr » Mon, 23 Jun 2003 04:43:55

For those of you running Windows XP:  I just installed XP Pro on a brand
new hard drive.  I'm taking it very slowly and carefully, as I want to
maintain the usability of my present Win98SE hard drive for as long as
possible.  No apps have been installed yet (except for what came with
XP) and by some miracle, the Internet connection automatically
configured itself, and I somehow got my e-mail account re-set up.
(Thank Goodness).  I have a couple of basic questions.

Obviously, a priority is getting my racing sims to run properly (GPL,
WinVROC, GTR2002, NR2003, etc, etc).

1.  Is it best to have your apps/sims installed on an NTFS partition or
should I stick with FAT32?
2.  During XP install, I set up a 20 GIG partition (NTFS) which I plan
to use strictly for the operating system and (perhaps) GoBack3.  The
hard drive and this partition were installed thru the XP installation,
but it never asked me to "install" the remaining partition.
Consequently, XP only sees my 20 Gig partition and not my remaining 60
Gigs of space on this hard drive.  How do I get it to see the rest of
the drive?
3.  I eventually will re-install all of my apps/sims onto this hard
drive.  Then I want to use my old hard drive as a secondary hard drive.
To make this task easier, I'd like to just install patches, etc from my
old hard drive rather than have to search fro them on the Net and
re-downlaod them all.  But this old drive has Win98 installed on it.
Can this old drive be set-up as non-bootable and still have Win98
installed on it?
4.  Finally, is it a good idea to run a dual OS system?  (XP and
Win98SE).  If so, how easy is it for me to have XP on this new drive,
but still be able to boot on occassion thru Win98SE from the old drive?
Or do both OS's need to reside on the same physical drive?  (I hope that
question is clear.....)

Thanks for any help with this.  Any thoughts on how I'm setting the
system up (pro or con) would also be appreciated.  Win XP installation
went quite smoothly (except for not recognizing the 2nd partition, and
not being able to print -- probably need a new driver, I guess).  I've
put the old drive back in the PC now, so that I have a fully operational
system in the meantime again.

FYI, my system is an Epox 8Kha+ mobo, Radeon 9700 Pro, 512 Megs RAM,
SoundBlaster Live, Logi MOMO Force wheel, TSW pedals, Cable Modem.

Thanks!

Bert

You were the only reason that it didnt go 100% smooth.

Some of those questions you should have asked before hand.

I hope there is a cure for your apparent fear.

A quick follow-up question -- Should I or should I not download/install the
Service Pack for WinXP?  Any other essential downloads?

Thanks!

See inline.

I prefer NTFS totally , more stable and secure. All my hard drives on XP Pro
are formatted NTFS, all my games play fine on it.

20 gb is probably a little large for the system parition, however if you do
use GoBack on it, then perhaps not. Be sure and disable system restore in XP
should you elect to go with GoBack.
When you installed XP, you paritioned and formatted your C partition. That
is now your system parition. Now, in Windows, go into contol panel,
administrative services, and computer management. Click on disk management.
Here you will see your 20 gb system parition marked as active and healthy,
and you will see the remainder of your hard drive space marked as
unallocated. You can parition and format it right from here, in XP's disk
management.

I have never run dual boot, and never really needed too. However, it is my
understanding should you want to do this, you need to install 98 first on
the main partition, then install XP on another.
But yes, you can slave the old drive to the new one, keeping all the files
on it, and use it to store, move, copy, etc data files. Any programs on it
would have to be reinstalled.

Sounds like your doing fine. As long as you don't have any games or apps
that won't run on XP, I would go ahead and make the system full XP with NTFS
formatting. Be sure and check for any XP updates to programs and apps you
might want to reinstall.
Go ahead and partition and reformatt your remaining unallocated space. Then,
make sure you have the lastest drivers installed for your hardware. Then, go
to windows update and download and install the updates, if you see a SP1 (
which means it was not inluded in your version of XP cd), then download and
instal it first, then go get the remaining updates.

Good luck,
