OT: New Hard Drive Installation Advice Please

by Peter Hoope » Sat, 30 Jun 2001 04:16:32

Hi all,
Just hoping someone here will be able to offer some advice before I go
ahead and install my new hard drive. It is a 40gb drive and I am just
wondering what is considered the best way to set it up... one single
40gb partition or split into 2 or 3 seperate ones.

I thought I would maybe set up one large partition with Windows 98SE
or ME as the main OS  and another smaller partition with Win 2000
installed so I can try it out. My original drive (15gb) will be used
to install my sims \ games, etc.

Is this a reasonable idea or am I better off sticking a single large
drive.

TIA

PH

All I can say is plan ahead. Once Windows is installed, it's a real pain to
install a new HD or partition and old one because your CD ROM letter
changes.

I have a 20 gig in 3 partitions, operating system, some programs etc. on
one, makes it easier to reformat.  Stuff like N4 and GPL on one, music and
downloaded programs you may delete on another.

Thanks guys..
Think I'll go with the 2 or 3 partitions then.

I left my original 30gb drive alone and split my new drive into two
partitions.  I don't think I'd use a single, simply because that's a lot of
space to manage and it limits your options unless you don't mind doing a lot
of work later.  As to how many partitions, you'll need to decide that based
on your intended usage. More than three is a bit much for that size drive,
IMO.

If your only going to be using that one drive, I would partition it, at
least have a seperate partition for your games.
I added a hard drive to my system a few months ago, a 20 gb IBM, but I kepy
my original 4.3 gb ibm drive as my C drive, and let the new hard drive add
as the D drive. I have all my games installed on D, and my operating system
along with some programs on my C drive.

hi,

with regard to windows 9x & 2000.

my advice is to set your cd / dvd / cdr drive(s) to another drive
letter.  I currently start at N: for my cd & O: for my dvd.

i have a removable drive bay transport work & downloads from my office
to the house.  sometimes the transport drive has 1 partition,
sometimes 2 etc.  in this case, the cd / cdr drive letters never
change.  only the ide disks sometimes change.

as for moving stuff around later in the event you change your mind,
invest in something like ghost and partitionmagic(or other equivalent
products).  They are incredible products and the time saved by using
more than justifies the cost in my opinion.

final tip.  maybe not for everyone, and some of you already know this,
but I'll repeat.

after installing your OS on a clean drive.  install your fave apps /
drivers / patches whatever.  try and keep it compact (say < 800meg).
then ghost the hard disk to a file, if it compresses well, it should
be small enough to fit on a cd.  then put ghost & the image file on a
cd.  if you're really clever, make the cd bootable.

you'll never know when that cd will come in useful.

darn.  sorry for the long off-topic post.

Regards all,
istoff

Hi PH,

Assuming you are installing and ATA100 Drive, if your Motherboard supports
ATA 66 or 100 make sure you set the Jumpers on the drive to CS (Cable
Select) and use the 80 Pin IDE Cable with the MAster Drive on the end plug
and the slave drive on the centre plug otherwise you will not get the
benefits of the extra throughput.

Regards
Peter

"Peter Cook"
(snips)
So should the 'cable select' jumper be set on the new hard drive?  or Both
the hard drive and CD(rom ,rw,etc) or just the CD?  Just trying to
clarify...always wondered what the 'cable select' was for.

Cable select kinda makes it act like a Floppy Cable where the A and B drives
were always in the same spot.

Personally, if you are going to be using a ATA100 Drive, I would get your
CDs off of the same IDE Connection.

Move them to the secondary IDE.    They will only slow your Hard Drive down

hi,

while waiting for a clever person to answer, i thought i'd give you my
answer instead.  i did a search on google using the keywords 'ghost
bootable cd' and got the following good links.

http://members.ozemail.com.au/~rossstew/drs/sec2.html
http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/

between these two you should have tons of info to work from.
