OT Hard Drive help

by Gandolf » Sat, 13 Jan 2001 22:20:26

Good morning all, My slave HD craped out and I want to replace it.
It was a old 560mb out of my first putter. My primary drive is only 1.6g.
I picked up a new drive, 15 gig Maxtor and I want to replace my 560 w/ it.
the instr dont really get into installing as a slave. I know I have to set
the jumpers to slave. Do I have to change anything in the Bios?
Will I need my W98 cd?  Are there any sites that could be of any help?

            TIA. Doug D

All you need to do is set it's jumper for 'slave' then go to the bios and
choose the auto detect option.  reboot and you are done.  Maxtor usually
includes a floppy that walks you through most of this....

YOu might consider using the new drive as your main one.  The specs
are probably better than your old 1.6G

I actually put in a Maxtor slave HD only yesterday, actually! You'll need
the correct positioning of the jumpers, like you say, (Maxtor have them on
their site) and yes, go to CMOS/BIOS, and hit the Auto Detect selection. Say
yes to everything (default is no), and that's all. DISCLAIMER: This worked
for me, no guarantee it'll work for you.

whoo, take it easy.

Do you knwo if your MB takes a 15 Gig HDD ?

Then why don't you put the big one master and your 1.6G as the slave, don't
forget that the bigger the drive is the faster it goes....

Use ghost to clone your 1.6 data on the 15G so you don't lose ANYTHING, you
don't have to change ANYTHING....works like in a dream

ATA66.

and is ATA33.

Please explain how my slave drive is faster than my main drive.

provided the drives are the same size 'physically' and the same ATA speed
and the same rpm there will be more data per sq.cm or sq.in whatever. and
the bigger drive will get more data in one revolution than the small, just
because they are more densely packed on the big one....

OK.  I'll just assume all your incorrect global statements are as a
result of the technical qualifications to the statement you failed to
mention.

yes, I should havesaid more, but when you compare things you want to have a
reaso able similitude at the start.

No point comparing the lap time in monza in GPL and GP3....

This is true, but I aften have to advise people who are not very
knowledgeable in computers and I am sensitive to broad statements that
can easily be misleading.

As I'm sure you know, the ATA burst transfer rate, rotational speed
and access times are really what determine a drives "speed".  It is
possible to buy a smaller, faster drive, even for less money, so
informing someone that a larger (and more expensive) drive is always
faster is misleading.

In your example, I believe you were contrasting against a 1.6G drive,
which would certainly be slower than anything available today. In that
context you were certainly correct.

and of course this is what a neophyte computer enthusiast is thinking
about when you tell him a larger drive is faster?

I don't think so.  That's my whole point.
