N3 modem to modem

by John Do » Thu, 02 Mar 2000 04:00:00

In regards to an earlier post concerning  a modem to modem connection for n3
racing, where one user used his computer as a dial up server and the other
dialed into it, I need a little more info.  Are there any settings I am not
missing ????

I clicked on dial up server on my system selected no password, allow callers
and PPP connection...and on the other machine I configured a new dial up
networking with the number on the other system...keep getting disconnected
or no response.....what am I missing. Are there some settings that I need to
turn on or off??  do I have to specify an IP address under TCP properties
under network.???  something to do with gateway???bindings ???

any help in detail would be appreciated..

thanks

Tom,

In control panel, open up networking.  There's a tab there, I think it 's
called Identification, you and the computer you are connecting with need to
have the same Workgroup name.  Let me know if that works.

try this...
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jenderby/q2net/
its for quake2 but should work for N3.  It covers all the settings for one
rig dialing another.
I followed this and it worked fine for Q2.

N3 modem to modem

I've tried all this and I'm still having the following problem:
I set up my computer as the server and the second computer dials in and
connects, no problem.  Then when I go into N3 Multiplayer, I set up as host
and check only TCP/IP.  When I click connect, my computer starts dialing my
ISP Dial-up and kicks off the other computer.
Am I missing something?

Any help would be appreciated.

in multiplayer.  If it goes back and tries to dial you ISP just cancel
it should take you back to N3.  The other computer should check IPX
only in multiplayer.  This should work.

JB,
I tried what you said and N3 gave the message can't open IPX socket on both
my machine and the dial-up computer.  When I select TCP/IP, my computer
tries to dial my ISP.  Is it possible I have a setup problem with Dial-up
server?

Thanks

I had this problem, too.  Go into your internet explorer options in
the connections tab and make sure the "connect to internet using a
local area network" button is selected, if it's set to "using a modem"
it will try to log on everytime.  It shouldn't matter if you use
tcp/ip or ipx at this point.

After I did this it cleared the problem right up.
